The last time these teams met in the postseason, the Blue Jays smoked the Mariners on route to the 1985 title.  Five years later, much was the same -- the two teams were again among the top three offenses in SMILEY (each hitting exactly 244 homers during the year), and while the Mariners' defense was again execrable, their bullpen could still be the difference-maker.

Game 1: Jack McDowell vs. Dave Stieb.  The Mariners' philosophy has been clear all year: keep it close enough to let the offense do its job.  With the exception of portly machine Sam Horn (3-for-4 with two solo homers), the Mariners were shut down by the AL Cy Young runner-up (3-for-29 with a double).  Stieb went 8 1/3 strong innings, Duane Ward shut the door, and the M's were quickly down 0-1.  Blue Jays 6, Mariners 3.

Game 2: Randy Johnson vs. Tom Candiotti.  Seattle's heavily right-handed lineup meant no southpaw starters for Toronto, making Candiotti the surprise starter in game two.  The surprise was a pleasant one for Mariner batters, as every lineup slot reached base and Seattle erupted for seven runs on 14 hits, chasing Candiotti in the fourth and forcing the Blue Jays to burn almost six full innings of relief.  Randy Johnson labored through six innings, but he was good enough to win.  Mariners 7, Blue Jays 3.

Game 3: Willie Blair vs. John Burkett.  Blair-Burkett doesn't exactly invite comparison to McLain-Gibson, and Burkett's early "work" -- coughing up a grand slam to Dave Winfield in the first -- confirmed suspicions that this was no pitchers' duel.  But Blair was holding a 4-1 lead in the sixth, when M's batter realized that they were, in fact, facing Willie Blair.  Blair gave up the lead, Agosto and Henke gascanned the inning (two runs, no outs), and the Mariners took an 8-4 lead into the ninth.  Toronto clawed back into it -- even notching two hits against Dennis Eckersley -- before the Cy Young winner (Eck) got the MVP (Kelly Gruber) to ground out to end game three.  Mariners 8, Blue Jays 6.

Game 4: McDowell vs. Stieb.  Somehow, the series comes full circle to this low-scoring affair.  A Ken Griffey Jr. triple plated Julio Franco in the first.  Toronto bounced back to tie it in the third on a Lance Parrish solo shot.  Jack Clark finally gets his sole hit in the series, doubling home Griffey and Edgar Martinez.  And that would do it, as McDowell held the Jays to two solo homers from Parrish, handed it to Harvey in the 8th, and to Eckersley in the ninth.  Mariners 4, Blue Jays 2.

Big thanks to Alan for for hosting, and for being such a gracious adversary.  The Mariners are headed to their second World Series!
