Subject: SFN at SDN
It's Opening Day in San Diego, and the Padres take the field in front of their adoring fans. The fans suddenly become a little less adoring as the Giants bat around in the 1st inning, racking up 4 runs, with Kevin Mitchell's three-run bomb the biggest hit. SD starter Dennis Rasmussen is pounded in his 3 innings, giving up 7 runs while his SF counterpart Don Robinson cruises along with 7 high quality innings (4 hits allowed, 1 run). This one ends SF11 SD 1. Gary Carter has a highly successful debut in a Giants uniform, with three hits, two runs, and two RBIs. In Game 2, it takes until the 3rd inning for the Giants to build up a big lead. They get a five-spot in the 3rd to take a 6-1 lead. However, in this game, the Padres would not stop fighting back. They got 2 in the 5th, 1 in the 6th, and 2 in the 7th to tie it at 6 all. The first SF batter in the top of the 8th, Will "The Thrill" Clark blasted a home run (his second HR of the game) to give SF a lead they would not relinquish. Wally Ritchie throws two shutout innings to earn the save and it's SF 7, SD 6, Game 3 was a dramatic one, with the game sent into extra innings after being tied at 4 after 9 innings. Giants had a chance to go ahead in the 10th, but young Benito Santiago artfully blocked the plate and nabbed Will Clark to end the inning. Both teams got exceptional relief pitching as the game went on, and finally, the Padres put together a rally in the bottom of the 16th. Benito Santiago singled, moved to second on a Dave Martinez groundout, and came home with the winning run when pinch-hitter Paul Faries "Wear Boots" (any Black Sabbath fans out there? Anyone?? Bueller??) drove a single up the middle. Padres take it 5-4 in 16 tense and excruciating innings. Jose Melendez gets the win with 3 shutout innings of relief. Bruce Hurst of the Padres has a perfect game going into the 7th before he gives up a walk and then finally a hit (to Dante Bichette). Hurst got out of the 7th unscathed, and was riding on a 1-0 lead thinks to an early Fred McGriff performance. Craig Lefferts came in and tossed two shutout innings of his own and this one ends 1-0 SD. Nice job by hard-luck Erik Hanson of SF, who kept the Padres limited to just the one run in seven innings.
