Subject: Chicago @ Pittsburgh
Games 2, 3, and 4 hummed along with a completely different tune than the opener.
G2 provided the Cubs the opportunity to jump on top, and by the end of the 5th inning, Chicago had a 4-0 lead off former Cub Greg Maddux (6 4 4 4 4 8). The biggest hit was Chico Walker's 2-out, 2-run single in the 1st inning.
The Pirates began their comeback in the 6th when Jose Lind singled home Barry Bonds and Lind eventually scored on a wild pitch himself. Walker came through again with a leadoff home run in the 8th which ended up being a key insurance run as the
Pirates scored two more in the bottom of the 8th when Chuck McElroy walked both Bobby Bonilla and Van Slyke with the bases loaded. The Cubs tried to hold onto the slim 1-run lead in the 9th, and after Paul Assenmacher gave up a leadoff single to PH Lloyd McClendon, Chicago summoned Goose Gossage for his first Cubs' save in his career. The "Goose" recorded his 343rd Smiley career save when he induced PH Carlos Martinez to ground into a DP, and Jay Bell to ground out to end the game.
Chico Walker was the leading hitter for Chicago with this 2 hits and 3 RBI. Jose Lind was the only Pirate with 2 hits.
Final Score: Chicago 5, Pittsburgh 4 WP- Morgan 1-0, LP- Maddux 0-1, SV- Gossage (1) HR- C.Walker (1)
G3 Although both teams broke through with a run in the first, Pete Harnisch (6 1/3 5 1 1 4 1) was a bit better in his first Cubs' start than the Pirates' John Smiley (6 6 3 1 4 4) managed for Pittsburgh. Of course, Jose Lind's 2-out 4th inning error was crucial for Pittsburgh as
Shawon Dunston followed with a 2-run HR to put the Cubs ahead, 3-1, where the game stood until almost the very end.
The 9th inning provided much drama as Pittsburgh staged a rally. Mike LaValliere singled off of the lefty Paul Assenmacher to begin the inning. Gossage was summoned again from the bullpen once again when PH Lloyd McClendon was announced and retired the future manager on a fly ball. Jay Bell subsequently walked before Gossage's wild pitch placed the runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out. Javier Ortiz then lifted a sac fly to Dawson in RF that scored LaValliere and moved Bell to third base. With the score 3-2, the Cubs elected to walk Barry Bonds intentionally to pitch
to Jose Lind. Lind grounded to third and that was the ballgame as Chicago had won 2 consecutive games by a lone run.
Final Score: Chicago 3, Pittsburgh 2 WP- Harnisch 1-0, LP- Smiley 0-1, SV- Gossage (2) HR- Dunston (1)
G4 Darryl Kile pitched
a complete game (9 8 2 2 1 5) in leading the Cubs to their 3rd consecutive win in Pittsburgh. Chicago got another HR from Shawon Dunston, Sammy Sosa's 1st career HR as a Cub, and 3 RBI from Ryne Sandberg in the finale. Doug Dascenzo led all Chicago hitters with 3 hits and Mike Pagliarulo ripped two RBI singles to account
for the Pirates' runs.
Final Score: Chicago 6, Pittsburgh 2 WP- Kile 1-0, LP- Smith 0-1 HR- Dunston (2), Sosa (1)
With the 6-0 winning margin for Pittsburgh in G1, the two teams each scored 14 runs altogether. But, this is one series that
which will differ from the pythagorean as Chicago won 3 of the 4 contests at TRS.

With both teams opening away from Pittsburgh, Bob Walk got the ball for the home opener for the Pirates and did not disappoint. The veteran pitcher who was acquired for a 2nd round pick from Seattle this past off-season stymied Cubs' hitters from the beginning. The "Whirlybird's" line (8 5 0 0 0 4) was indicative of the command he possessed. Meanwhile, the Bucco attack got underway early with an RBI single by Orlando Merced in the 1st inning and a 3-run homer by Andy Van Slyke in the 3rd. By the time Walk hit the 100 pitch mark in his final inning, the Pirates had amassed a 6-0 lead. Neal Heaton trotted in from the bullpen to preserve the shutout, but only after Ryne Sandberg singled
and Andre Dawson doubled him to
third base. The Cubs left the
runners in place when Mike Aldrete struck out and PH Hubie Brooks fouled out for the final out.
Both Andy Van Slyke and Mike LaValliere had 2 hits for the Pirates whereas Mark Grace's 3 hits led Chicago hitters. Pittsburgh outhit Chicago 8-6 and drew the only 4 walks of the game.
Final Score: Pittsburgh 6, Chicago 0 WP- Walk 1-0, LP- Delucia 0-1 HR- Van Slyke (1), LaValliere (1) |
