Subject: Blue Jays @ Orioles

In Week 1 the Jays staff was victimized by the same monstrous underachievement they suffered with throughout 1990, but so far in Week 2 we've lowered our gopher rate from **OVER TWO PER GAME** down to merely one!....

Game 1: Today's magic number was eleven: 11 LOB for TOA, 11 hits allowed by Jimmy Key but fortunately also 11 LOB for the Orioles.  BAA's 11 hits were mainly singles (10) with, amazingly, zero gophers mixed in and Key walked just one.  The Jays built a 3-0 lead in the middle innings when Greg Briley greeted reliever Curt Schilling with a 2-run single, and after Key faltered in the 8th Duane Ward loaded the bases for the O's -- and then got out of it.  Final score: 3-1.

===========================================

Game 2: Tom Candiotti didn't pitch all that badly, but was victimized by the Cal Ripken Gopher Show and the fact that Baltimore solved their LOB problem from the opener, LOBbing just one lone runner today.  Ripken collected 5 RBI in the first 3 innings, but those were all the runs Baltimore got, and the Jays put up a 5-spot in between Cal's heroics and eked out a 7-5 win.  Toronto's scoring ended early today too, as Todd Frohwirth recorded 4.2 IP of hitless relief against us to close out the game.

===========================================

Game 3: It took Todd Stottlemyre less than 2 innings to allow another pair of gophers, so he was yanked in favor of Mike Flanagan (who pitched well) and Mike Timlin (who didn't).  Timlin's first week and a half in the majors has been plagued by the most hilariously miserable luck imaginable.  A critical error in the 8th plated the losing unearned run.  Final score: 5-4.

See if you can figure out today's "magic number": Mighty Joe Orsulak gophered (split card: 1) off of Stottlemyre to give the home team a 2-0 lead 2 batters into the game; Ripken's leadoff triple (split card: 1) in the 6th off of Timlin would be a tie-breaing run; and after Manny Lee's soon-to-be-fatal error opened the 8th, David Segui singled (split card: 1) him into scoring position.  There was even another split card: 1 for the O's but it was just for show and didn't figure in the scoring.

Trailing by one, TOA got a leadoff triple from Robby Alomar in the bottom of the 9th and failed to tie the game.

===========================================

Game 4: David Wells and Bob Milacki both took shutouts into the late innings, and of course a gopher decided the game -- but it was in Toronto's favor!!!  Instead of settling for a non-scoring leadoff triple today, Alomar homered leading off the 8th and that was the only run of the contest.  Wells & Ward combined on a 4-hitter, though 2 of the 4 were doubles.

Alan
