Subject: Reds @ Giants
The Reds continue to play atrocious defense for no apparent reason, and whatever the season record is for stranding runners at third base is, at this rate we will surely break it (if we haven't already). But at least this week we didn't fold up entirely on the road.... Game 1: The Reds LOBbed 8 (6 in scoring position) and committed 2 errors good for 3 unearned runs. The score was tied at 1 (in terms of earned runs) until Randy Myers added some late gasoline. Final score: 6-1, but it should have been far closer. Erik Hanson had a rather easy time with the Cincy lineup, what with not having to worry about any baserunners actually scoring no matter how far along they got. Game 2: Cincy scratched out some runs, mainly via homers from Darrin Jackson and Barry Larkin, while Jose Rijo lowered his ERA to 1.64 with 7.2 scoreless innings. The contest was still close and Rob Dibble provided a 9th inning of heart-attack relief, but the Reds pulled it out by the score of 4-0. Aside from the 2 homers he allowed, SFN starter Kelly Downs dodged almost every bullet (and there were many) and Rijo/Dibble did the same, getting the Giants to LOB slightly more runners than even we did. Game 3: No high LOB count today for San Fran (2), and their efficiency made Greg Swindell almost let a 4-0 lead get completely away, but Norm Charlton stepped in to save the day. Final score: 5-4. SFN's Terry Mulholland wasn't very difficult (8 IP, 11 hits, 19 total bases) but our patented "leave-em-at-third" approach continues to work quite effectively. Game 4: The Giants mostly failed to capitalize on numerous sabotage defense opportunities (3 more Cincy errors among other blown x's), tallying just one unearned run. The Reds got baserunners galore against Bud Black (14 in 7 innings) but they were nearly all just singles & walks (and LOB) therefore the game remained close. Cincy got 4 in 4th with a 5th run gunned at the plate and rode that to a 5-2 win for Tim Belcher with very solid relief help from Dwayne Henry (he's new; he'll learn). Alan |
