Game 1 The Montreal Expos ended a long winless drought and toppled the Cincinnati Reds by a 6 to 2 score at Riverfront Stadium.
Brian Barnes (2-1) earned his pay with a solid performance for Montreal . He went 7 innings surrendering 9 hits and 2 walks. Both teams ended up with 10 hits on the night.
Jose Rijo (2-2) took the loss. 'We really needed this win' said Steve Bivens. 'That first drink of water at the end of a drought sure does taste good!' LOB: Expos 4, Reds 8 Game 2 Jeff Bagwell had 4 hits as the Montreal Expos defeated the Cincinnati Reds in 10 innings by a score of 6 to 3 at Riverfront Stadium.
Both teams had scored 3 runs after nine full innings. Montreal came out on top in the 10th inning. After two were out Bagwell got things going when he lined a one-base hit. Chris James followed next and he slapped a single. Carlos Baerga then rifled a three-run blast. Wes Chamberlain was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Montreal totaled 8 hits on the night.
The winning pitcher was Jeff Fassero (1-0) who allowed no runs in 2/3 of an inning. Jeff Shaw was credited with his 1st save. Kevin Gross (0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief. He surrendered 3 hits and no walks in 1 inning. LOB: Expos 6, Reds 9 Game 3 Second baseman Mariano Duncan cracked a homer and had 2 RBI and Greg Swindell tossed a complete game as the Cincinnati Reds bested the Montreal Expos 10 to 2 at Riverfront Stadium.
In the 3rd inning Cincinnati scored 8 runs with the help of 8 hits. That early scoring was all that Swindell (3-0) needed. Cincinnati rapped out 16 hits for the night.
Chris Haney (0-2) was charged with the loss. Cincinnati knocked him around a bit, as he gave up 8 runs in 4 innings. With this win, Cincinnati has a 10-7 record. They have been 5-5 lately. Montreal can't seem to snap out of their recent 'funk'. Now they have a miserable 2-8 record over the last couple weeks. LOB: Expos 9, Reds 6 Game 4 Dennis Martinez was on top of his game, blanking Cincinnati on just 2 hits as the Montreal Expos destroyed the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 11 to 0 at Riverfront Stadium.
Martinez (3-0) was virtually untouchable. He didn't give up much, just 2 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 3.38 to 2.37. Montreal totaled 15 hits on the afternoon.
Greg Harris (1-2) took the loss. He allowed 8 hits and 6 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings. LOB: Expos 11, Reds 6
