Boston finishes the home and home with the Tigers by splitting the 4 games.  You know it wasn't going well when 2 splits of 1's fail to get a runner on for x plays. First was a "double" with the runner missing first base and the second was the thrown out for making a wide turn play.

game 1: Reed opened the game by stretching out a double, moved to third on a sac bunt and scored on a ground out. Deer then homered for a 2-0 lead. Boston added 2 more in the 2nd on a 2 run Burks homer (after the above mentioned missed double) and Boston looked to be cruising with a 4-0 lead. Detroit came back in the bottom of the inning in a big way,,,scoring 7 times on just 3 hits (along with 4 walks). The Tigers had just 1 run in with 2 on and 2 outs when they got a walk, single 1-9, walk and then Fielder hit a grand slam. Reed hit a sac fly in the 7th but Fielder answered with another homer to make the final 8-5.

game 2: Mark Gardiner continued an amazing start to the season by tossing 7 innings of 3 hit ball to lower his era to 0.44. Scioscia hit a 2 run homer and Dave Bergmann added a 2 run homer of his own in the 9th to give Boston the 5-0 win. Klink tossed 2 innings to get his first save and the first by someone other than Gray.

game 3: Dave Otto continued the strong pitching performances by Boston by tossing a 3 hit complete game with one of the hits a homerun. Boston broke open a 1-1 game in the 5th when HAL intentionally walked Burks to load the bases. Trammell couldn't turn an inning ending x play dp and the go ahead run scored. After a walk reloaded the bases, Greenwell singled in 2 runs (missing a 2b 1-15). Scioscia added another 2 run homer to make the final 6-1. Thanks to 10 walks, Boston managed to leave 12 men on in this one.

game 4: Reed led off the game with a triple and couldn't score. Boston led off with a single, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on a sac fly to give Detroit the 1-0 lead. They added another run on a Trammell single in the 5th. In the 7th, Boston again got the lead off man on third (this time a single+error) and he was still there with 2 outs. Burks then hit a homer to tie the game.  Clemens left after 8 and Joe Sambito came on (actually Joe Hesketh) and the first batter got a bp homer (split of 15 which would be an out in most stadiums) to give Detroit the 3-2 win.

Boston is 10-11 on the season but has outscored the opposition by 17 runs (89-72) Their 1-6 record in 1 run games has a lot to do with that.  They got their batting average up to .226 for the season which is better than the opposition's .224.
