Not sure if it was the pitching finally waking up or that we were playing sf but the Padres come a split away from a sweep in SF. The starters allowed just 6 earned runs in 28.1 innings to drop their collective era to 5.40 on the season. game 1: Pascal Perez finally showed the form that the Padres were hoping for when they drafted him by tossing 7 innings of 3 hit shutout ball. That dropped his era to 6.23 on the season and his hr/9 ip down to 3.1 (or 4 times were is should be). He did catch a couple breaks when the Giants rolled a couple 4-10's with righ handed hitters up. Against righties its a hr 1 flyout... lefties hr 1-19. Padres scored 2 in the 4th when Willie McGee threw a ball into the stands. Tony Gwynn singled in a run in the 8th. Giants avoided the shutout when Matt Willliams led off the bottom of the 9th with a home run to make the final 3-1 game 2: This one went into extras but was decided by one team getting a bp homer and the other team not. Giants got single runs in each of the first 3 innings and the Padres got 2 in the 4th. Kevin Mitchell got a 2 run bp homer on a split of 7 (must have been a good night in sf as the other games it was down to 1-3 chance) and the Giants led 5-2. Padres loaded the bases with no outs in the 8th and got a run when Gwynn grounded into a dp. McGriff then missed a 3 run bp homer to keep the score 5-3. Rance Mulliniks saved him by hitting a 2 run shot in the 9th and we headed into extras. In the top of the 11th I foolishly sent a 1-11 runner hoping to get that go ahead run with 2 outs. Of course the split was 20 so it wouldn't have mattered if Usain Bolt was the runner. Gary Carter plated the winning run in the 12th with 2 outs, getting a 6-9 roll which was the only chance to get on in the column. Giants win 6-5. game 3: Jimmy Jones makes his return to SD a good one by allowing just 1 run in 7 innings. The offense woke up with 3 home runs(mcgriff, roberts and santiago) and 4 stolen bases and the Padres rolled to a 9-1 win. game 4: Andy Benes looked shaky to start...allowing a single, sac bunt, double to start the game. He settled down and allowed just 2 more hits in 7.1 innings of work. That dropped his era to 6.35 on the season. Roberts hit another homer but the best offense seemed to be hitting the ball to gold glover Matt williams. He made his first error of the season, a 2 base in the 2nd that aided a 2 run inning. He made another in the 3rd that lead to another run (thanks to McGee throwing the ball away again). He made a 3rd error in the 6th inning but that was erased on a dp. |
