Subject: BAA @ MNA Week 3

[Note: No new CM for Week 4.]

In a series of two-run margins, Baltimore takes three of four at Minnesota.

Game 1: BAA 5, MNA 3

With Jack Morris and Ben McDonald on the mound, both teams took more chances on the basepaths.  After watching Kent Hrbek try to steal a base, the Orioles took a 3-0 lead in the 2nd on the speed of… Cal Ripken and Chito Martinez???  Cal singled, stole second, took 3rd on a flyball out, and was singled in by Martinez.  After Minnesota starter Jack Morris plunked Brady Anderson, Martinez moved up on another fly ball, Brady stole second, and Mike Devereaux hit a two-run single.  The lead was cut to 3-2 in the bottom of the frame, as the Twins stole two bases of their own.  A sac fly by Leo Gomez made it 4-2 after 4; the O’s added another in the sixth as Ripken doubled and scored on a Randy Milligan single.  The Twins threatened in the 8th as Hrbek homered, but Todd Frohwirth came in to get Kirby Puckett to hit into a critical double play.  Orioles closer Gregg Olson shut the Twins down for the win.

Game 2: BAA 5, MNA 3

The score was tied 1-1 after offsetting solo shots in the 2nd by Martinez and  Chili Davis, though it took a long-odds outfield assist by Baltimore’s Mike Devereaux to maintain the equilibrium.  In the 4th, Baltimore’s Craig Biggio scored on a passed ball to break the tie.  Two triples helped the Orioles stretch the lead to 4-1 in the 5th. Luis Polonia tripled and scored in the 6th to cut the O’s lead to 4-2, and a Dale Sveum RBI single made it 4-3 after 7, but Anderson provided an insurance run in the 9th with an RBI single.   Gregg Olson gave the Twins two baserunners before getting another critical double play to end the threat.

Game 3: BAA 5, MNA 3

This time the Twins scored first, as Davis walked and scored on a groundout.  Hrbek doubled in two more runs off Rick Sutcliffe.  Meanwhile, the Orioles had two runners caught stealing and a third was somehow picked off with a 100% chance for a successful steal.  But Baltimore tied it 3-3 in the 5th on a two-run triple by Samuel.  It was still 3-3 after 8 because Devereaux delivered another OF assist to nail Hrbek at the plate.  In the 10th, the Twins’ Greg Gagne hit a leadoff triple, but Jim Poole came in to keep him there.   In the 11th, Mike Sharperson delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single for an Orioles victory.

Game 4: MNA 6, BAA 4

Baltimore broke through for three runs in the 3rd, thanks to a triple by Sharperson, a double by Samuel, and a critical balk by Minnesota starter Kevin Tapani.  One swing by Shane Mack in the 4th made it 3-2, but Candy Maldonado’s 6th inning sac fly padded the O’s lead to 4-2.  The Twins tied it in the 6th as Jim Abbott’s intentional walk of Mack backfired.  In the 7th, Abbott walked the last batter he saw, Chuck Knoblauch; reliever Mark Williamson gave up a long fly to Hrbek for a 6-4 Twins lead, and Rick Aguilera survived a late Orioles rally to hold that lead and avoid the sweep.
