april 17 Right fielder Mickey Mantle ripped 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the New York AL Yankees topped the Washington Senators in 10 innings by a score of 9 to 5 at D.C. Stadium. Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings. Finally, New York AL pulled the game out in the 10th inning. The critical plate appearance was by Hector Lopez who deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he tripled bringing in two baserunners. Both teams totaled 9 on the night. Hal Reniff(1-0) got the win allowing no runs in 2 innings. Ray Culp(1-3) took the loss in relief. He gave up 1 hit and 2 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings. 'I had a big day, but there's a lot of credit to go around' Mantle said. 'We played well together as a team.'
