Subject: Reds @ Padres

The Reds are not exempt by any means from the Road Curse of the N.L. West.  The week we witnessed an extremely offensive role reversal, as the puny-hitting Padres pounded the Cincy pitchers while the Cincy lineup found that the SDN batters apparently used up 100% (and more) of the available breaks....

Game 1: Scott Scudder's season debut was going well until a few moments into the first inning.  The bases suddenly got loaded after 2 outs & nobody on, and then they got emptied (Cincy batters, please take note of how that is done) and the home team was well on its way to an early 5-0 lead that became a 5-1 final.  Bruce Hurst had a boring day against the inert Cincy offense, although the teams were actually nearly identical in terms of baserunners and total bases.  Guess which team got all the clutch hits?

================================================

Game 2: Greg Harris & Rob Dibble were victimized by what will surely be San Diego's biggest outburst of the year, losing a one-sided surgical nightmare by the score of 12-1.  Once again our top-ranked offense was null & void, beginning a 3-game trend of turning what few runners we got into successful gb(A) practice for the Padre infield.

================================================

Game 3: Nobody chokes as effectively or as often as the Reds, but that gets boring after a few decades so we tried something different by reversing the pitching roles today.  Reliever Randy Myers started the game and, amazingly, pitched decently & was given a 4-2 lead with a handful of outs left to get.

Things proceeded normally from that point, as reliever Dwayne Henry almost blew the rest of the lead away, so the Reds turned to starting pitchers to try to avert disaster.  Greg Swindell, like an old pro, earned Blown Save #1 to complete the choke and the contest went into extra innings.

Many extra innings.

Starter Tim Belcher provided 4 scoreless frames and starter Jose Rijo 3 more, but the game ended the wrong way two batters into the SDN 16th.  Final score: 5-4.  The formerly potent Cincy offense only got 1 measly runner into scoring position in the 7 overtime innings; a 2-out bases-empty double that amounted to nothing.

================================================

Game 4: The Reds had another pair of 2-run leads in this game, but Dibble suppressed his gag reflex just enough to save Kevin Gross's narrow 4-3 win.  Cincy broke on top with 2 in the first off of Pascual Perez and never trailed, though Dibble did his best to get the Padres the victory after Rance Mulliniks' leadoff gopher in the bottom of the 9th chased Gross and cut the lead to 1.  Tony Gwynn was going to end it one way or the other, with 2 outs and 2 RISP -- and Dibble somehow fanned him.

Von Hayes continues his bid for Underachiever of the Century (or at least a trip to the minors), another 0-fer today lowering his average to .102.

Alan
