They fall to 4-13 on the road but are an amazing 13-5 at home. The series itself was a jekyll-hyde one as the teams each got 4 hits in the first and last game but 29 hits (19 by SD) in game 2. game 1: Greg Harris finally has a good start and still loses. He allowed just 3 hits and no walks in 7 innings. Unfortunately, one of those 3 hits was a bp homer. He has now allowed 50% more homers than walks (6-4) in his 30. 2 innings on the season. Meanwhile SD missed their bp homer chance (and a 1-15 chance by McGriff). Mets got a walk, bunt, single in the 8th to make the final 2-0. Viola went the distance to even his record at 3-3. 3 of the 4 Padres hits were doubles. game 2: Padres shuffled the lineup a little and it paid big dividends. Dave Martinez hit a 3 run homer out of the 5 spot in the first inning and Fred McGriff launched 2 homers hitting out of the 3 spot (T Gwynn got the day off). Jimmy Jones had a rough start (runs in both of the first 2 innings) and rough end and made 2 errors but was solid in the middle to get the win. 7 different Padres had at least 2 hits (Roberts had 4 in the cleanup spot). Padres rolled to an 11-4 win. game 3: Back to game 1 form as both teams managed just 4 hits apiece in this one. One only needs to mention that Pascal Perez was on the mound for SD and you know a hr was involved. Snake bitten Perez allowed a hr on 1-3 flyout chance. Mets then put a walk and their other 3 hits for the game together in the 3rd and went on to win 3-0. Cone went the distance for NY and lowered his era to 1.56 Padres team era was over 5 after week 1 but has now dropped to 3.39 (8th best overall) despite 3 starters still having eras above 5.
