Expos put on their hitting-shoes in Atlanta and pound Brave pitching for 29 runs and 38 hits in only 3 games. Braves counter with 38 hits of their own, but for only 19 runs. Not enough. Braves use 24 pitchers in the three games including Jeff Blauser who pitches the final inning of the third game…and doesn’t allow a run. The sad thing about all this is that the Expos hitting just isn’t this good….
Game 1 The Montreal Expos ended a long winless drought and bested the Atlanta Braves by a 10 to 7 score at Fulton Co. Stadium.
Montreal claimed the early lead in the first inning when they tallied 4 runs on 3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Nelson Santovenia who silenced the stadium when he smacked a three-run homer. Atlanta out-hit Montreal 14 to 10, but Montreal ended up with more runs.
The win went to Chris Nabholz (2-0) who allowed 2 runs in 5 innings. Nabholz got help from Jeff Shaw who was credited with his 2nd save. Steve Avery (2-4) was hit with the loss. Game 2 Left fielder Eric Bullock had 3 base hits and 3 RBI as the Montreal Expos beat the Atlanta Braves by a score of 6 to 3.
Bill Sampen (1-0) was given credit for the win. He went 1 inning and surrendered up 2 hits and no walks. Montreal totaled 11 hits on the night.
Mel Rojas earned the save, his 3rd. The losing pitcher was Steve Olin (0-2) in relief. He surrendered 3 runs and 2 hits without retiring a batter. Game 3 The Montreal Expos bested the Atlanta Braves by a 13 to 9 score at Fulton Co. Stadium.
Carlos Baerga was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided much of the offense for the visitors. He blasted a two-run home run in the 1st inning, stroked a base-hit bringing in two baserunners in the 2nd inning and stroked a single in the 9th inning. Montreal dominated offensively as they scored in 6 different innings.
The victory was credited to Bill Sampen (2-0) who went 4 innings, allowing 2 runs. Sampen was helped out by Jeff Shaw who recorded his 3rd save. Steve Avery (2-5) absorbed the loss in relief. He gave up 2 runs in 1 inning and saw his ERA jump from 3.60 to 4.00.
