Subject: BAA @ DEA Week 8

[Note: Unless you hear otherwise by the weekly deadline, still no updates to Orioles CM.]

With both teams locked in a tight 4-way division race, Detroit takes two of three at home from the Orioles.  More accurately, Baltimore gives Detroit two of three.

Game 1: BAA 5, DEA 1

Cal Ripken doubled with two out in the 1st and Randy Milligan singled him in to put the O’s on top 1-0.  The teams traded runs in the 3rd as Brady Anderson scored on a Craig Biggio sac fly and Detroit’s Mickey Tettleton singled in Milt Cuyler.  The score stood at 2-1 until the 6th, when Cecil Espy doubled in two for the Orioles.  Anderson tripled and scored on a wild pitch for an insurance run, which looked big when the Tigers loaded the bases in the ninth before finally succumbing.  Veteran O’s starter Rick Sutcliffe ran his record to 4-1 and lowered his ERA to 2.09, thanks in part to Biggio throwing out Cuyler trying to steal third – twice.

Game 2: DEA 7, BAA 6 (11)

Mark Leiter started out strong for Detroit, as did his catcher; Tettleton threw out the first two O’s baserunners  on steal attempts and singled in a run in the first.  It could have been worse for Orioles starter Jim Abbott, who made an error on a sac bunt but was bailed out by a key double play.  Baltimore took a 2-1 lead in the 4th on Ripken’s league-leading 21st home run.  Anderson made it 3-1 in the 5th with his first homer of the season, and in the 6th scrub starter Luis Mercedes tripled and scored on a sac fly by – who else? – Ripken.  In the 7th, Detroit’s Travis Fryman greeted reliever Curt Schilling with a triple and scored on an Allan Trammell single to make it 4-2 Orioles.  That’s how it stood when Orioles closer Greg Olson came in for the 9th, but Olson gave up RBI singles to Trammell and Cecil Fielder for his 4th blown save as the O’s barely survived into extra innings.  In the 11th, it looked as though the Tigers dodged a bullet when Joe Orsulak was thrown out at the plate, but Juan Samuel delivered a clutch two-out, two-run double off Mike Henneman.  Usually reliable reliever Mark Williamson, in line for the win, yielded an RBI single to Fielder and a two-run homer to Tony Phillips as the Tigers pulled out the victory.

Game 3: DEA 4, BAA 1

Baltimore’s Samuel led off the game with a double but was stranded on first.  So in the third, he took matters into his own hands with a solo shot for a 1-0 O’s lead.  That was quickly erased in the bottom of the frame, as Charles Nagy walked the first three Tigers batters to set up a 3-run double by  Tettleton.  Cuyler manufactured an insurance run in the 7th as he walked, stole second , advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored on a sac fly by Lou Whitaker.  Detroit’s Bill Gullickson went the distance for the win.  The Orioles outhit the Tigers 8-7, but all four Tigers runners who scored had reached on a walk.
