Subject: Chicago @ Pittsburgh

The Cubs continue their amazing early play in the Iron City by sweeping the Pirates in a 3-game series.  After 1/3 of the season, Chicago is 6-1 @Pittsburgh and 9-11 on the road vs. all other teams.  Of course, this wouldn't be quite as amazing if Pittsburgh weren't easily in 1st place and 35-21 overall for 1991.   Or if the total margin of runs scored in these 7 games wasn't 26 for the Cubs and 20 for the Bucs.

Yes, Mike, I fully expect the North Siders to pay the price when the Pirates come to visit Wrigley the next few times.   :)

G1 was peculiar because Pirates starter Scott Sanderson (2 2/3 4 1 1 0 1) received such an early hook despite only allowing 1 run.  This aided Chicago in a big way because his replacement, Francisco Oliveras, gave up 4 runs in 3 1/3 innings, and that would be all the runs the Cubs would need.  Pete Harnisch (9 6 2 2 4 4) continued his roll while racking up his 7th win already.  Of course, I'd be remiss in not mentioning the hitting star, Ryne Sandberg.  He made a 1-0 lead 3-0 by hitting a 2-run shot in the 5th and then cracked another in his next AB in the 7th to push the lead to 5-2.  Mike Lavalliere's 2-run homer was the extent of the Pirates' output.

Final Score: Chicago 5, Pittsburgh 2
WP- Harnisch 7-3, LP- Sanderson 1-5
HR- Sandberg 2 (12), Lavalliere (2)

G2 Obviously it's early in the season because Greg Maddux and Mike Morgan hooked up as opposing starters for the 3rd time already this year.  Morgan is now 2-1 in the 3 matchups as he was even better than Maddux in an old fashioned pitchers' duel.  Morgan (9 4 0 0 2 4) allowed the first Pirate hit to Jay Bell with 2 outs in the Pirates' 5th inning.  Pittsburgh's best chance to score occurred in the 8th when Mike Pagliarulo singled with 2 outs in front of Bell's double.  Jose Lind grounded out to end the Bucs' best threat.  Meanwhile Maddux (8 3 2 2 4 6) allowed solo runs in the 3rd and 4th innings which caused him to take the loss.

Final Score: Chicago 2, Pittsburgh 0
WP- Morgan 6-5, LP- Maddux 8-3
HR- Brooks (3)

G3 ended with a flourish, and the Cubs felt very fortunate with the sweep.  Chicago built a 5-0 lead going into the 9th inning behind the fine pitching of Darryl Kile (8 2/3 6 4 3 6 4).  However, the Pirates got off the mat in the following way... Bonilla walk, Lavalliere double play grounder- 2 outs.  oops.  And, then, PH Lee Stevens walked, Bell singled, and Lind struck a 2-run double.  Carlos Martinez then singled Lind to 3rd and Bonds reached on an error by 1B Mike Aldrete to make it 5-3.  Exit Kile and enter Paul Assenmacher.  Pinch-hitter Lloyd McClendon then singled in Martinez and the Pirates had the tying and winning runs on base for Andy Van Slyke.  Van Slyke has never hit lefties real well, and this was no exception as Assenmacher got the best of him by striking him out to end the game.  Ryne Sandberg was the Cubs' hero yet again by collecting a single, double, and HR in 4 AB.

Final Score: Chicago 5, Pittsburgh 4
WP- Kile 4-2, LP- Smiley 5-4, SV- Assenmacher (9)
HR- Sandberg (13)
