Subject: Blue Jays @ Rangers

The Rangers may be struggling with almost all other teams, but they play like the '27 Yankees against the Jays.  These four contests could hardly have been closer, aided by the fact that the TOA bullpen was in sadly typical form most of the time....

Game 1: All series long HAL treated the #1 defense in the majors as if we were the Cincinnati Reds.  Today, Gold-Glove 3B Kelly Gruber blew two x-plays good for 3 bases and 2 critical unearned runs.  If that wasn't enough, Duane Ward choked up 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th to erase our lead (with, of course, 2 outs).  But Manny Lee atoned for being a blown-x machine at SS (all series long) and tripled leading off the 10th -- and actually scored!  Ward regained his composure in the bottom of the frame and Toronto escaped with a difficult 5-4 win.

========================================

Game 2: Rod Nichols' second start of 1991 was as disastrous as his first, while Bryn Smith dodged every bullet for the Rangers most of the day.  The Jays eventually got the offense started, but couldn't dig out of the 6-0 hole we created.  Final score: 6-4.  Albert Belle homered twice for the home team.  Mike Timlin had one of his very few semi-effective outings for Toronto (3.2 IP, 5 baserunners but none scored) which at least gave us a theoretical chance at a comeback.

========================================

Game 3: Todd Stottlemyre was atrocious (11 baserunners, 7 runs, 3 gophers) while Jose Guzman was good enough for Texas until he faltered in the 7th and the Jays wound up with a temporary 4-run lead.  That was Stottlemyre's cue to go from bad to worse, which he did, immediately giving 3 runs back.

Tom Henke allowed a run in the 8th to cut that former 4-run lead down to zero and the contest proceeded to extras where Henke fanned the first two hitters in the TEA 10th after we had scored a run moments earlier.  With the Rangers down to their final out it was deja vu all over again as Henke gophered one up to pinch hitter Juan Gonzalez for yet *another* last-ditch choke.

But we loaded the bases with 2 outs in the 11th -- and .174 hitter Greg Myers came through with a 2-run double!  Mike Flanagan closed it out to save the day.

Today's precisely-timed defensive gaffe came in the 4th inning from Manny Lee who donated an error with -- literally -- a .000 hitter at the plate.  Of course an unearned run resulted and almost cost the game.

========================================

Game 4: Jimmy Key labored through a 149-pitch outing but managed to give up only 1 run in 8+ innings although the Texas combo of Bobby Witt and Wayne Rosenthal was just as good; Rosenthal in particular, who came into the game with a lousy ERA and somehow came up with 4.2 IP, 0 ER and 7 Ks.

For a rare change the Texas D was worse than Toronto's (though Manny Lee did his daily thing AGAIN) and we took a brief timeout from hitting into constant GIDPs and capitalized on Dean Palmer's error for what turned out to be the winning run in the 7th.  Final score: 2-1.  Ward behaved himself this time around and retired the 2 batters he faced in the 9th without requiring the Heimlich Maneuver.

Alan
