Subject: Blue Jays @ Red Sox
Despite HAL's continued destruction of Toronto's normally-outstanding defense (and the most underachieving pitching staff in the entire majors), the Jays rebounded from last week's nightmare at home and may FINALLY be getting close to playing up to our actual talent level. But we had to overcome one of the all-time epic choke attempts in the opener.... Game 1: The Jays took an early 2-0 lead and blew it, but that's hardly a rarity. The 'epic' part came when we had a 9-3 lead after 8 innings and then tacked on another run in the 9th. Surely that 10th run wouldn't matter. It certainly did. After 8 reasonably good innings, HAL suddenly laser-beamed in on Tom Candiotti's weak spots, threw in yet another blown-x (a mere 4 today), then Mike Timlin relieved and was destroyed as usual (2 batters faced, 0 retired). We had to gun down the tying run at the plate with 1 out and Duane Ward whiffed Phil Plantier on 3 pitches to end a rally that consisted of 4 singles and ever so much Toronto generosity: 4 free passes, 1 wild pitch and 1 error. Final score: 10-9. The only surprising part was that we had the '10'. ========================================== Game 2: The Toronto offense abused Boston's Bob Ojeda for 18 baserunners in 6.2 IP, on our way to a 16 LOB performance. Fortunately we found a little time to actually score some runs. The Jays outhit the Sox 19-4 and David Wells tossed a complete-game shutout. Final score: 7-0. We amassed 31 total bases + 5 walks and the scoring margin could easily have been far worse. ============================================= Game 3: Even Roger Clemens was not immune to the attack, as he allowed 9 hits and 5 runs in 7 IP. Rod Nichols dodged bullets successfully for a rare change, as the league continues to hit Nichols about 175 points higher than his card deserves, and he escaped with his first win of the season. Final score: 8-2. Boston tried to match Toronto's astronomical LOB total from yesterday, fell just short (14). Devon White's homer in the first inning gave the visitors a 2-0 lead before Clemens retired a batter, and we nearly blew a 3-0 lead but pulled away with 5 late runs against Clemens & reliever Tim Burke. The Jays hit .379 in these 3 games (47 for 124) and slugged .629. Alan |
