Subject: Blue Jays @ Yankees

The crippled Blue Jays continue to limp along when we should be running (away with the A.L. East pennant race).  Massive underachievement and rock-bottom luck continue unabated, as we now find ourselves losing road series to teams to who barely win 1 out of 3 games against the rest of the league (and at home things are even worse lately)....

Game 1: David Wells retired the first Yankee he faced today; four batters later we were losing 4-1 after Roberto Kelly's grand slam.  Wells settled down a little and hopes for a comeback were buoyed by the fact that batting practice pitcher Wade Taylor was on the mound for New York.

But Taylor pitched the best game of his life (7 IP, 8 baserunners, 2 ER) though he weakened slightly in the 7th and Toronto cut the Yankee lead from 5-1 to 5-3.  Then the Jays got our one and only break of the series when Cy Taylor was lifted in favor of Rich Monteleone, who HAL apparently thought was pitching for Toronto: Monteleone faced 7 batters and retired zero of them, allowing a 5-run comeback that gave the Jays and David Wells an 8-5 win.  Duane Ward was terrible but eventually nailed down the save.

=============================================

Game 2: NYA starter Charlie Leibrandt has had his troubles this year, but none of them were visible today.  Although the hits were just about even and the Jays actually had more total bases than the Yanks, the run column (and the luck) was totally one-sided.  Leibrandt dodged numerous bullets with ease, while Todd Stottlemyre & Mike Timlin were gunned down at every opportunity.  Final score: 9-2.  New York took full advantage of the 7 free passes and 2 errors they were given, as well as the fact that they got 100% of the clutch hits.

=============================================

Game 3: A carbon copy of game 2, except for the fact that Toronto's Rod Nichols pitched far better than yesterday's dynamic duo.  But now even Andy Hawkins can beat the Jays without much effort, and he did so with a Leibrandt-esque bullet-dodging performance that included getting the Jays to LOB 11 (when a mere 10 wouldn't have been enough).  Hawkins allowed 5 hits in 9 IP and just 1 run.

Nichols took a shutout and a slim lead into the 6th, at which point the Yanks got 3 straight singles and a tie game with still no one out.  Mike Flanagan got Mattingly to GIDP but then with 2 outs allowed what turned out to be the game-losing RBI single.  Final score: 2-1, another devastating loss that could easily have been a win if even one clutch hit had occurred.

Alan
