Subject: Reds @ Braves
The Reds get blown out in one game, and put on yet another "nobody chokes like the Reds" clinic in the other 3 contests -- but we came back (barely) from two of them.... Game 1: Cincy starter Scott Scudder was cruising despite no offensive support, until he was suddenly given a 4-1 lead in the 7th; then Scudder, Norm Charlton and one nicely-timed blown-x with 2 outs in the 8th combined to erase 100% of that lead. But the Reds rendered that choke incomplete when we came back with 3 singles in the 9th, good for one run and 3 LOB (of our total of 11) and we eked out a 5-4 win when Dwayne Henry closed it out. ======================================== Game 2: Chuck Finley hasn't pitched very well in 1991 and Tim Belcher generally has, but they reversed roles today with Finley doing OK and Belcher dying during surgery. Final score: 8-3. Atlanta dismembered Belcher and Charlton (who was helpless again) for 14 hits and 2 gophers while Finley successfully scattered 6 hits in 8 innings. ======================================== Game 3: The #1 offense in the N.L. pecked away at Doug Drabek and sent him to an early shower while Randy Myers was, like Scudder, doing nicely until we foolishly got him some more runs to work with. A 5-run 6th extended the Cincinnati lead to 10-1 and if you think that's a safe lead for the Reds you must not have been paying attention for the last 20+ seasons. John Kruk's grand slam in the 5-run rally was exactly matched by David Justice moments later -- after we had already choked up 3 instant runs. By the time Greg Harris got the third out, our 10-1 lead had become 10-8. The 2 Slams in one inning probably ties a record, and another monstrous choke extends our historic lead in that category as well. Fortunately the Braves had become exhausted by all those trips around the bases, so Rob Dibble took it the rest of the way and even had some occasional moments of effectiveness. Final score: 11-9. ======================================== Game 4: As often as the Reds pull off incredible chokes, we damn well ought to know how to recover by now. But all good things must come to an end and Greg Swindell turned today's 3-0 lead into a 4-3 loss. The key (aside from the game-losing gopher) was issuing a surgical walk on a non-hitting pitcher's card; 3 runs resulted from that timely morsel of misfortune. The Reds outhit the Braves and had more total bases and baserunners, but 3 critical GIDPs (one of which ended the game, fittingly) and that timely walk to the pitcher made this a choke from which there was no recovery.
