Subject: Blue Jays @ Royals

The Jays come one patented choke away from sweeping a K.C. team that's tougher than their record shows....

Game 1: An unlikely duel between Todd Stottlemyre and Mike Boddicker was closer than the final 5-0 score indicates.  Stottlemyre was particularly sharp in a rare non-underachieving start, scattering 6 hits, 0 walks and 0 runs in 7.1 IP before Duane Ward weakly closed it out.  The Jays didn't really seal up the game until we tacked on a couple of runs in the 9th off of reliever Jeff Montgomery.

=========================================

Game 2: TOA catcher Greg Myers coughed up 2 timely throwing errors, good for 1 unearned run and 1 that wasn't but should have been, and single-handedly deprived starter Rod Nichols of a well-deserved win.  K.C. batting practice pitcher Mark Gubicza was phenomenal against the Jays, scattering 8 hits in 8 IP, fanning 8 batters and allowing just 2 runs.

But Toronto finally got a clutch hit when Joe Carter plated a pair of runs with a double in the 10th and Mike Flanagan earned the win with 2.2 innings of perfect relief (aside from yet another error, as HAL victimized the majors' #1 defense all series long).  Final score: 5-2.  Carter also homered in the game and drove in every Blue Jays run except the last one.  Nichols & Flanagan held the Royals to 7 hits, all singles.

=========================================

Game 3: Another game which required extra innings saw a yeoman effort from Royals starter Bruce Ruffin, who pitched into the 11th inning.  Ruffin fanned 11 Jays but also allowed 12 hits and 5 runs -- 3 of them with 2 outs in the 11th when Manny Lee came up with a 2-out bases-loaded double.  Mike Timlin provided 3.2 innings of effective relief (!) of David Wells and won for the second time in his rookie season.  Final score: 5-2.

The KCA offense managed just 8 hits and 9 total bases in 11 innings, not that the Jays fared a lot better until Ruffin collapsed in the 11th.

=========================================

Game 4: The 'Toms' did in the Jays today, as Tom C. had another miserable start (aided by timely sabotage defense) and Tom H. did what he does best and wasted our nice comeback effort.

Bret Saberhagen tossed a complete game for the Royals, walking nobody but being touched for 9 hits, 5 runs and 17 total bases -- and winning.

K.C. broke on top for 4 runs in a surgical second inning, keyed by a timely blown-x and an error which ruined what otherwise would have been an entirely scoreless frame.  Toronto fought back gamely to tie the score at 5 a few innings later, but Henke untied it in the 7th and Timlin helped him choke up one more run in the 8th.  Jays lose, 7-5.

Candiotti was brutalized for 12 hits in just 5.1 IP as his ERA skyrocketed towards 5.0 (good thing the Royals LOBbed 11 today) and the Henke-Timlin combo allowed just 3 baserunners in 2.2 innings but of course 2 of the 3 scored.

Alan
