The Cubs came up short in the final game and were unable to complete the sweep down South. G1 Somehow despite the Braves' 7-run 3rd and the Cubs' 5-run 8th, this slugfest was tied, 10-10, after 9 innings. Amazingly, the bullpens kept both teams scoreless in the 10th and 11th, but in the 12th, Chicago broke through. Andre Dawson followed Mark Grace's single with his 2nd HR of the game. Atlanta wasn't fully done scoring as the Braves rallied against reliever Bob Scanlan. Three consecutive 2-out walks to Gary Pettis, Jeff Blauser, and Ron Gant pushed across 1 run, but Terry Pendleton grounded to second base to end the game with the bases
loaded. *I don't know how Hal works, but John Smoltz, Chuck Finley, and Tom Glavine were responsible for the 14 outs recorded from the 8th inning forward. When Smoltz entered the game in the 8th, the Braves' last available reliever, Marvin Freeman, had faced only one batter before being removed. Grace (6-for-6 with 3 doubles) and
Dawson (3-for-7 with 2 HR and 5 RBI) powered the Cubs victory. New waiver pickup Jerry Willard also went 3-for-5 in his first game for Chicago. Kevin Maas was Atlanta's most productive hitter as he went 4-for-5 with a walk. Jeff Treadway was also 3-for-4 before being pulled for a pinch-hitter. There were plenty of hits to go around as Chicago outhit Atlanta, 20-16, but the Cubs' 3 errors were responsible for the game going to extra innings to begin with. Final Score: Chicago 12, Atlanta 11, 12 innings WP- Scanlan 3-4, LP- Finley 4-10 HR- Dawson 2 (23) G2 Atlanta's Maas continued his hot hitting with a solo HR to put the Braves up, 1-0, in the 2nd inning. Ryne Sandberg's solo HR tied the game in the 4th, and then the Cubs broke the game open in the 5th inning. Sandberg and Grace each had 2-run singles as the Cubs put up a 5-spot. Meanwhile, Pete Harnisch (6 3 1 1 1 8) moved to 6-1 on the road with a little help from the bulllpen.
Sandberg finished 3-for-5 with 2 HR and 5 RBI, and backup catcher Dan Wakamatsu was 3-for-3 with the GW RBI in the 5th inning. Pendleton and Maas split the Braves' 4 hits evenly between them. Final Score: Chicago 8, Atlanta 1 WP- Harnisch 9-8, LP- Avery 8-7 HR- Maas (11), Sandberg 2 (20) G3 ended up being another run explosion that was decided by one-run. John Smoltz (6 2/3 6 3 3 0 5) held a 3-0 lead until the 7th inning. After Chico Walker singled home a run, Willard hit a 2-run HR in the 7th that tied the score, 3-3. Atlanta came back in the bottom of the 7th by loading the bases with 1 out. Terry Pendleton cleared the bases with a double and returned the Braves to a 3-run lead. Pendleton was thrown out trying for 3rd which short-circuited the rally. Then the Cubs got back to business in the 8th. Everything happened with 2 outs. First Andre Dawson tripled home a run. Then, Dawson scored when Pendleton made
his 2nd error of the game on a groundball by Luis Salazar. PH Hubie Brooks then put Chicago ahead with a 2-run home run. Rich Gossage was then summoned from the bullpen and recorded the last 6 outs for the save. Walker and Pendleton each had 2 hits for their respective teams. Final Score: Chicago 7, Atlanta 6 WP- Scanlan 4-4, LP- A.Pena 5-1, SV- Gossage (4) HR- Willard (1), Brooks (4) G4 was the Braves game from start to finish. Tom Glavine came back from his series opening game issues (8 5 1 1 2 7) to record his 10th win as a starter. The Braves LF Gant went 3-for-4 and ended the contest a double shy of the cycle. Ryne Sandberg was 3-for-4 for the Cubs in defeat. Final Score: Atlanta 5, Chicago 2 WP- Glavine 10-4, LP- Delucia 2-7, SV- Honeycutt (1) HR- Gant (19), L.Salazar (3) |
