Subject: Blue Jays @ White Sox

The Jays needed (and GOT!!!) divine intervention to salvage a split after dropping two typically luckless efforts to open the series....

Game 1: If any game epitomizes the Blue Jays' season, this is a terrific candidate.  Two Frank Thomas gophers, one of them right at the split card limit, gave the Sox 100% of their RBIs and those gophers just happened to follow two timely bunt singles.  Meanwhile, the Jays racked up 16 baserunners against 3 CHA hurlers, and only got this result: LOB: TOA - 13, CHA - 2.  Final score: a 5-3 loss.  Fittingly, the Jays loaded the bases in the 9th, and scored zero.  The deciding gopher came with 2 outs in the CHA 8th off of alleged closer Duane Ward, who, sadly, is looking a lot like Tom Henke lately.  Ward's last 7 outings: 13.2 IP, 15 hits and 7 walks for a disastrous 14.5 baserunners per 9 IP.

============================================

Game 2: Tom Candiotti got behind 5-0 early, a hole that proved slightly too big to crawl out of.  Charlie Hough had his stuff today for the White Sox, walking just 3 and allowing only 1 earned run in 7.2 IP.  John Olerud's two late doubles provided most of the TOA offense, but his first split card double could easily have been a home run instead; of course Olerud was stranded and the Jays lost by 1.  Final score: 5-4.

============================================

Game 3: Rod Nichols tossed his first complete game of 1991 while the the Toronto batters made short work of Mark Portugal, outhitting the Sox 15-8 and collecting 27 total bases to CHA's 10 -- so naturally the contest was tight most of the way despite those lopsided stats.

The Jays finally pulled away with 4 late runs and sealed up an 8-3 win.  The offense reached double figures in LOB once more, and would do so again in game 4.  Ed Sprague doubled and had 3 RBI, and White and Calderon solo-homered.

============================================

Game 4: After choking up every Chicago run with 2 outs in an inning and blowing a comeback in the process, the Jays caught not only a break but an absolute miracle when we came from behind with 2 outs and nobody on in the 9th.  Down by a run, a Sprague single was followed by Dave Winfield rolling a split card home run chance -- and he got it!!!

The Jays had a solid 18-12 advantage in total bases and drew 7 walks, but it took a last-second hail Mary pass to win it (we must have those replacement refs working the game).  Final score: 5-4.  Jimmy Key was terrible on the mound for the Jays, even though it was all just singles and walks, but he somehow came out on top.  Mike Timlin pitched a successful 9th to earn the save.
