Subject: Reds @ Giants
The Reds have been such experts at choking away leads, even big ones, for so long that they may finally have learned how to recover.... Game 1: Tim Belcher was having one of the best games of his career, having allowed just 2 singles and 0 walks in his first 8.2 innings. Then a couple of surgical split cards suddenly gave the Giants 7 total bases (gopher, triple) but Belcher finally closed out the 5-1 win. Even as good as Belcher pitched, he had no breathing room at all most of the day because Chris Sabo's 2-run homer in the second was the only scoring of the game until the Reds tacked on a run in the 8th and 2 more in the 9th; Terry Mulholland pitched well for the Giants aside from that one pitch to Sabo. Cincy made a habit of scoring in the 9th during this series, which turned out to be a VERY important thing. ========================================== Game 2: Here's something new and different! The Reds choked away 100% of a 5-0 lead when Greg Swindell fell apart in the 6th and 7th innings and Dwayne Henry decided to help the Giants instead of his own team. With the contest still knotted at 5 in the 9th, Paul O'Neill came through with his 3rd & 4th RBIs of the game when he homered off of reliever Jeff Brantley. Norm Charlton, Cincy's only semi-effective pitcher of the game, registered the victory. Final score: 7-5. The Reds issued no free passes for the second day in a row. John Kruk, who isn't in the game for his defensive value, went 0 for 4 with a K and 2 critical GIDPs. ========================================== Game 3: Scott Scudder and Bud Black had very solid starts, particularly Scudder (7.1 IP, 4 hits, no walks, 1 ER). Scudder ran out of gas in the 8th however, and Randy Myers & Chris Sabo conspired to choke up an unearned run with 2 outs in the inning that fully eliminated our 2-0 lead and deprived Scudder of a very much deserved victory. But the Giants returned the unearned favor moments later when Kevin Mitchell botched Kevin Gross' routine fly ball with 2 outs, and Eric Davis raced home from second with the winning run. Final score: 3-2. In addition to (sort of) delivering the win at the plate, Gross earned it on the mound with 1.1 hitless innings of work. Myers' walk to Will Clark with 2 outs in the 8th was the first of the series by a Cincy pitcher (Gross added one in the 9th), and the Giants LOBbed only 11 runners altogether in the 3 games. Alan |
