Subject: PRESS RELEASE Minnesota Twins
The Minnesota Twins lost a heartbreaker to the Great Baltimore Orioles in Game Five of the ALCS by a score of 7-5 at a frigid Metropolitan Stadium on frosty fall Minnesota afternoon. Thus, ended the Twins hopes of a world series trip in 1969. The Twins for one of the few times this year, could not hold onto a 5-2 lead as Baltimore scored 5 unanswered runs in the top of the 8th. Ace reliever Ron Perranoski was unable to hold the lead for Bill Hands. The series was played very close, and included a 1-0 Twins win in game four to force a game five. Game five included two, two out rallies. Ultimately, the slightly better team won - as it should be. Nonetheless, Twins owner Rick Ramacier applauded his team's fine season and fine effort against the very tough and well managed Orioles. Ramacier was quoted as saying, "at the start of my first season in SMILEY, we knew we had a fairly good team. But, we didn't know how good it was until the season got underway. The level that we played at all year was incredible. Players like Harmon Killebrew, Tony Oliva, Rod Carew, Rich Reese, Leo Cardenas, Jim Perry, Ron Perranoski, and others made my job very, very easy. Lady luck was our frequent friend too." Our mid season trade with the Chicago Cubs helped too, as Bill Hands went 16-4 after coming over from the Cubs. With all of our key players with the exception of Bob Locker and Ted Uhlaender returning, we have high expectations for 1970 as most of our players are in their prime. Finally, Ramacier thanked everyone involved in SMILEY, "this great league invited me in as an owner of one of its finest franchises just prior to the start of the 1969 season and made feel very welcome. This is a great league with great owners and a great commissioner. I look forward to many many rewarding years of competition in SMILEY. And as the Brooklyn Dodgers used to say, wait till next year!" |
