Subject: Blue Jays @ Rangers & A's

Despite a plethora of surgical rolls & splits, the Jays manage to squeak out a winning road week....

TEA Game 1: Nolan Ryan and Tom Candiotti traded goose-eggs for a long time, Candiotti even taking a no-hitter through 5 innings.  In the top of the 6th the Jays broke through with 2 runs on John Olerud's 2-out double.  So HAL immediately zeroed in on the Candy Man and the no-hitter vanished exactly 1 pitch later and the lead took only a few seconds longer to be forfeit.

We went back up by 1 in the 7th; HAL immediately tied it with very little help from the Texas offense, on a 2-base blown-x, a wild pitch and a sac fly.

The choke was completed at last in the bottom of the 9th, when our second 2-base blown-x play (this one by a '1' fielder) put the losing run on base and a surgical split card finished us off.  Final score: 4-3.  Candiotti deserved FAR better, and the TOA hitters suffered from just as much surgically-precise misfortune as the defense and pitching did.

==========================================

TEA Game 2: And on it went today, with the Rangers finding every possible hit on Rod Nichols' card (5.2 IP, 11 hits), but once runners were on base -- which was always -- Nichols somehow got the Rangers to LOB them.

After our early 3-0 lead was methodically erased, the Texas defense was victimized for a change and the Jays took a 5-3 lead in the 8th.

So of course it took all of two batters for TOA bullpen lefty Mike Flanagan to give it right back (single, gopher).

Amazingly, we scored a run with 2 outs in the 9th, and -- far more amazingly -- Tom Henke retired all 6 batters he faced to earn the 6-5 win.

==========================================

OAA Game 1: Jimmy Key was his usual hittable self (6.1 IP, 9 hits), allowing 2 runs on  a trio of Oakland doubles in the 2nd.  But the Jays eventually stormed OAA starter Greg Hibbard and he left down by the count of 5-2 in the 6th, with 2 runs already in, nobody out and 2 still aboard.

Enter our old nemesis Curt Young, who pitched well (3.1 IP, 1 run) -- but only after allowing a 3-run home run to Devon White on his 5th pitch of the day.  TOA reliever Mike Timlin gophered up 2 runs in for Oakland the bottom of the 9th (natch) but Henke got the final 2 outs to preserve the suddenly-close 8-5 win.

==========================================

OAA Game 2: Todd Stottlemyre had a rare effective start and Bob Welch did too (an equally rare event).  Kelly Gruber opened the scoring with a solo homer in the Toronto 5th and we tacked on another run a couple of batters later on Robbie Alomar's RBI double.

Stottlemyre's shutout held up until the 8th, when slugging pinch-hitter Tommy Herr led off with an unlikely gopher, and Stott hit the showers immediately.  Flanagan recovered from his choke two games earlier and got the last 6 outs.  Final score: 3-1.

Stottlemyre and Flanagan combined on a 5-hitter, and Oakland's Welch had probably his best outing of 1991: 8.1 IP, 7 hits, 3 runs, 1 BB, 7 Ks.
