Subject: Reds @ Expos
Very soon, every N.L. team will struggle massively against the Expos; the Reds have been ahead of the curve against Montreal all season, and continued to struggle massively during this series.... Game 1: A mere 19-11 advantage in hits today (and 30-12 in total bases!) was not enough for the Reds, as Cincy pitchers pulled off the first of many late chokes. But this time we prevailed thanks to a 5-run 10th. Final score: 11-6. Cincy pitchers Chris Hammond and Milt Hill made their major-league debuts today, and quickly learned what HAL's scalpel feels like. Hammond allowed 8 hits in 6 innings, to go with his 8 walks as HAL zeroed in on his 6-column; Hill choked away a 2-run lead in the bottom of the 8th and by doing so established his arsonist credentials immediately. Hammond fared much better at the plate than he did on the mound: 2 for 3 for a double, 2 runs scored and an RBI. =================================== Game 2: Montreal's Dennis Martinez pitched a fine game (7 IP, 4 baserunners, 1 earned run) and Tim Belcher was matching Martinez nicely, taking a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th at which point it became Choking Time yet again. Belcher (2 runs), Myers (2 runs) and Dibble (2 runs including the game-losing gopher) conspired to throw this one away. Belcher was yanked when he was gophered for 2 runs with one out in the 7th; former aces Myers & Dibble then combined to allow 6 hits in 2 innings, Dibble allowing 6 total bases to a pair of light-hitting shortstops in the bottom of the 9th to seal up the choke. =================================== Game 3: Jose Rijo was having an effective start until he suddenly forfeited our 2-1 lead in the 7th without much effort on the part of the home team (walk, HBP, single, sac fly, walk). But MON reliever Bill Sampen out-choked the Reds (!) and gave those 2 runs right back in the CIN 8th; it would have been 4 runs, but we had TWO runners gunned down at the plate. Final score: 4-3. Charlton & Gross closed it out with much wildness in their 2 highly-eventful relief innings. =================================== Game 4: The Reds took advantage of exactly zero of our scoring opportunities against Brian Barnes, who tossed a 4-hit shutout at the #1 offense in the league. Meanwhile, Greg Swindell had a not-effective-enough start (7 IP, 8 baserunners, 9 Ks) for the Reds and lost by the score of 3-0. With the game not on the line this time, Hill struck out the side in the MON 8th on 11 pitches and reduced his ERA to something slightly less astronomical than it was. Despite our paucity of hits, we managed to out-LOB the Expos even while hitting into 2 timely GIDPs. The Reds settle for a split, though we could easily have won (or lost) all 4 games. Alan |
