Subject: Blue Jays @ White Sox & A's

Toronto continues to play at an infinitesimal fraction of our actual talent, putting on a textbook clinic of how to blow not just a game, not just a series (two series, actually), but an entire pennant that should have been a cakewalk.  This week we choke not once, not twice, not three times, but FOUR TIMES in four games in our opponent's final at bats....

Choke #1: Jimmy Key's twin brother Charlie Leibrandt took the mound for the first time in a Blue Jay uniform, and you'd never know the difference.  But Leibrandt wasn't terrible (7 IP, 8 hits, 3 runs) and didn't even take the loss today.  Toronto hitters got nary a break (a theme for the entire week, if not the season) but finally scratched out 3 runs to erase our 3-0 deficit in the 7th and take the new guy off the hook.

In the bottom of the 8th, Mike Timlin put a couple of White Sox on base before choking up the game-losing 2-out gopher -- our third of the day -- to Jose Canseco.  Final score: 6-3.  The efficient CHA offense received 13 baserunners today, LOBbed only 3.

====================================

Choke #2: is when your starting pitcher (David Wells) takes a shutout into the 8th, but isn't winning because his opponent, the immortal Paul McClellan, is not only also pitching a shutout but basically a NO-HITTER.  It was really only a 1-hitter, but that one hit was a blown x-play.

Exactly like Choke #1, with 2 outs (of course) and 2 on in the 8th, Wells gophered up the losing 3 runs, then Jason Grimsley provided some relief -- comic relief, as always -- by gophering one up to the first (and only) batter he faced.  Final score: 4-0.

CHA outfielder Dale '4' Murphy is still a Gold Glove '1' when facing the Jays: he went 3 for 3 on x chances in the series.

====================================

Choke #3: On to Kansas City, where at least we finally remembered how to get on base -- but not what to do once we got there.  Despite 11 costly LOB, Toronto took a 3-0 lead which Todd Stottlemyre (with the help of one very critical unearned run via his own error) whittled down to 3-2 by the 6th inning and there things stood until the 9th.

Stottlemyre was long gone by that time, having been replaced by Mike Flanagan and then Ace Choker Duane Ward.

Who lived up to his reputation nicely today.  Ward loaded the bases for K.C. by donating a couple of runners off his supposedly-excellent card.  Then, still leading 3-2 and with the Royals down to their final out, completed the choke by allowing a 2-run single.  Final score: 4-3.  One more to add to the long list.

====================================

Choke #4: Nearly-exhausted K.C. ace Bret Saberhagen was not his usual unhittable self (11 hits) and the Jays jumped on him for a quick 3-0 lead in the first.  Sadly, TOA starter Rod Nichols was his usual hittable self and two innings later our lead was totally forfeit via the first of two timely gophers Nichols would permit.

Toronto came up with our first clutch hit in several eons when John Olerud doubled home a pair with two outs in the 5th, but Nichols made short work of that temporary advantage by coughing up a 2-out, 2-run gopher to powerful Gary Varsho seconds later (his second home run in 4 seasons).

Kelly Gruber got us back to even in the 8th with an RBI single but in the bottom of the 9th Timlin opened the frame with a pair of free passes and Varsho came through again, this time with a mere single which completed by far the best game of his life.  Final score: 7-6.
