Subject: Chicago @ Montreal

For the 3rd series in a row, Chicago splits the 4 games on the road- this time in Montreal.

G1 started out as a fine pitchers' duel between Rich Delucia (5 2/3 2 1 1 3 3) of the Cubs and Tommy Greene (6 1/3 7 5 4 3 7) of Montreal.  In the first 6 innings, Chicago led, 2-1 on a 6th inning Andre Dawson RBI-double.  In the last 3 innings, both teams took advantage of thin bullpens by scoring a total of 9 runs.  When the smoke cleared, the Cubs held on to a 7-5 win.  Delino DeShields got his series off to a good start with a 1-for-2 game with a home run, 2 walks, and 2 RBI out of the leadoff spot for Montreal.  Four of Chicago's 11 hits weredoubles.  Delucia lowered his ERA to 5.40 with was just one out short of his 2nd quality start since July 10th.

Final Score: Chicago 7, Montreal 5
WP- Delucia 4-9, LP- Greene 15-7, SV- Assenmacher (19)
HR- DeShields (8)

G2 was another tight contest.  In this one, both teams had posted 3-run innings early and Montreal had a 4-3 lead after 6 innings when Spike Owen scored on a DeShields RBI single after leading the 6th off with a triple.  Chicago broke through in the 7th by smacking 4 consecutive bases-loaded RBI singles (Dawson, Sandberg, Sosa, & Dunston) to take a 7-4 lead.  Montreal was not done as they pulled within 1 run in the bottom of the 7th on Andujar Cedeno's 2-run double.  The Cubs' Heathcliff Slocumb not only pitched out of that 7th inning jam, but he put up zeroesconsecutive strong game for Montreal when he went 4-for-5.  His teammate Carlos Baerga went 3-for-5 with a double and 2 RBI.  The Cubs took advantage of 7 Expo pitchers' walks to post the 3-run and 4-run innings which were just enough to win.

Final Score: Chicago 7, Montreal 6
WP- Robinson 3-2, LP- Barnes 8-11, SV- Slocumb (4)
HR- none

G3  For the first time, the 3rd game's strong starting pitching held up with both lineups being held in check over the late innings.  The Expos' Chris Nabholz (9 7 1 1 1 7) pitched a complete game and was slightly better than the hard-luck Darryl Kile (7 4 2 2 5 8) of Chicago.  After Mark Grace tied the game, 1-1, on an RBI single in the 3rd, Larry Walker lofted a sac fly RBI to score Delino DeShields for the eventual winning run in the bottom of the inning.  DeShields did not get a hit in this game, but he scored both Expos'runs.  The three players with multiple hits in this game were all Cubs- Grace, Ryne Sandberg, and Doug Dascenzo.

Final Score: Montreal 2, Chicago 1
WP- Nabholz 9-6, LP- Kile 4-13
HR- none

G4 In the finale, starting pitching again established itself as the story.  With help from the Cubs' bullpen, Mike Morgan (6 2/3 4 0 0 5 4) and Montreal's Joe Grahe (9 3 0 0 2 3) matched zeroes through the top of the 9th.   In the bottom of the inning, Chicago's fielding provided Montreal with an opening to score.  SpikeOwen drew a one-out walk and Grahe's attempted sacrifice was thrown away by Chicago's 3B Chico Walker.  After Goose Gossage struck out DeShields for the out that should have sent the game to extra innings, Marquis Grissom (3-for-17 in t Montreal outhit Chicago 5-3 and due to 2 DP's and 2 caught stealing,  he Cubs only left one man on base the entire game.  Delino DeShields concluded off a terrific series going 1-for-3.  He finished with a 6-for-12 output including the opening game homer and 6 walks.

Final Score: Montreal 3, Chicago 0
WP- Grahe 4-6, LP- Gossage 1-1
HR- Grissom (7)
