Subject: Blue Jays @ Tigers
The Monstrously Underachieving 1991 Toronto Blue Jays fail to gain any ground in the first of two critical showdowns with the Tigers, but at least we didn't lose any ground for the time being, despite enduring two break-free games.... Game 1: The Jays built a 6-1 lead for Todd Stottlemyre with a lot of help (4 unearned runs) from the Detroit defense. Then the gophers came out to play and Toronto barely held on for a 7-4 win. Stottlemyre, Flanagan and Timlin combined on a 6-hitter but 3 of the hits were gophers and another was a double. Alan Trammell took a break from his mundane season and was the chief beneficiary of the TOA pitchers' power surge today, with a 4 2 3 2 line consisting of a double & a pair of homers. Frank Tanana took the loss for Detroit; he didn't pitch well but without those unearned runs the outcome would have been much different. =============================================== Game 2: Toronto struck early against the very-hittable Walt Terrell and gave the even-more-hittable Rod Nichols a 4-0 lead, at which point the entire squad ran into a brick wall. Doctor HAL butchered Nichols during a 5-run surgical 4th inning and the TOA bullpen added to the damage. Of course we ceased scoring too. Final score: 8-4. Seven different players scored runs for the home team during what turned out to be a cakewalk win despite the rough beginning. =============================================== Game 3: Making a very rare appearance in a road contest, Toronto rookie Juan Guzman had his good stuff and needed every bit of it in today's deceptive 6-0 win. Guzman scattered 5 singles and was conveniently wild enough (5 free passes) to keep the Detroit hitters off balance. Jack Howell got the party started with a solo home run in the 2nd inning off of Danny Cox, and that microscopic margin was still in place after 6 innings. Then the Jays put together 6 singles and 2 walks during the 7th and 8th frames to finally pull away. Jose Vizcaino went 4 for 4 from the #9 spot in the Jays lineup. =============================================== Game 4: With Toronto having a chance to take the series and re-open a sliver of daylight in the standings, the breaks turned way ugly to the point where a hit machine like Bill Gullickson was able to totally silence the Jays offense. Final score: 7-0, as our typical rotten luck was not merely confined to Toronto batters on this day. Charlie Leibrandt did another flawless impersonation of Jimmy Key at his worst, and was axed after donating 5 runs in 3 IP. The bullpen gave up a gopher-a-minute to thwart any chance of a comeback, which wasn't likely to happen anyway despite lots of baserunners (11 LOB). Detroit batters went up swinging hard and generally connecting (12 hits, 24 total bases), though not always (14 strikeouts). Alan |
