Toronto takes 3 of 4 from the visiting Orioles.  If you like good, close, competitive baseball… well, you’d have had to wait three days before seeing any.

Game 1: BAA 8, TOA 1

Baltimore took a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo homer by Cal Ripken.  In the third, after utility infielder Juan Bell (.172) tripled, Brady Anderson not only squeezed the run home, but turned it into a bunt hit, stole second and third, and scored on an error to put the Orioles up 3-0.  The Blue Jays got on the board in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Devon White, but Chris Hoiles threw White out on a steal attempt to end the rally.  The scored remained 3-1 until Leo Gomez chased Toronto starter Rod Nichols in the 6th with an RBI single; Bell followed with a single for only his second RBI of the season.  David Segui’s pinch-hit double upped the lead to 7-1 in the 8th , and a wild pitch brought home one more run in the 9th.  Jim Abbott allowed only the one unearned run in 8 2/3 IP.

Game 2: TOA 6, BAA 2

After both teams failed to capitalize on first-inning opportunities, the game remained scoreless until a three-run Toronto rally in the 5th, keyed by RBI singles by While and Roberto Alomar.   The lead grew to 6-0 in the 7th as White struck again with a solo shot and Dave Winfield added a two-run double.   Meanwhile, Toronto starter Juan Guzman threw seven innings of two-hit shutout ball.  Once Guzman gave way to the Toronto bullpen, the Orioles scratched out a run in the eight and got another when Randy Milligan went deep in the 9th to make the game look less one-sided than it really was.

Game 3: TOA 5, BAA 1

Toronto took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd.  Winfield singled in a run but was caught stealing, just ahead of a home run by Lance Parrish.    The O’s finally scored on a solo homer by Leo Gomez in the 5th, but a homer by Winfield keyed a three-run eighth to put the game out of reach.  It would have been more lopsided if it weren’t for O’s catcher Chris Hoiles, who threw out *five* runners on attempted steals (all with 70% or better chance of success.)

Game 4: TOA 4, BAA 3

The game was tied 1-1 after an inning as Alomar and the O’s Mike Devereaux traded long flies.  White doubled in a third inning run to give the Jays a 2-1 lead, but Baltimore tied it in the 4th on an RBI groundout.  The score stayed even until the 7th, when Ivan Calderon doubled in Alomar to put the Blue Jays back on top, 3-2.  In the 8th, Segui promptly homered to tie it back up, only to be matched by Kelly Gruber with what proved to be the game winner.
