Subject: Chicago @ New York

The Cubs dropped 3 close, low-scoring contests to the Mets before blowing NY out in the finale.

G1 Pete Harnisch pitched a remarkable game (8 1 1 0 2 8), but the 1 hit he gave up in the 2nd inning to Mackey Sasser followed a 2-base error on Andre Dawson who dropped Carmelo Martinez's easy flyball.  That gave the Mets the only run they would need to win the game.  Chicago should have definitely scored in the 6th when Hubie Brooks led off with a triple vs. Pete Schourek (9 4 0 0 5 5), but not only did Chicago pull the 19 split on a 1-18 scoring chance, but Mackey Sasser became a 1-14 blocking the plate and I pulled the 15.  Needless tosay, that was Chicago's best scoring chance, and Schourek cruised in with the complete game shutout despite the Mets being outhit, 4-2.  Mark Grace had half of the Cubs hits when he went 2-for-4.

Final Score: New York 1, Chicago 0
WP- Schourek 3-0, LP- Harnisch 14-12
HR- none

G2 was another tight pitchers' duel.  Mike Morgan (7 8 3 3 2 5) and Frank Viola (6 2/3 6 2 2 0 7) swapped zeroes until the bottom of the 6th.  Gregg Jefferies launched a 2-out, 2-run HR to put NY out front, 2-0.  The Cubs came right back in the 7th on a run-scoring single by Luis Salazar and later a run-scoring double by Alex Cole.  Cole's hit was with 2 outs, and ended up finishing off the inning because Sammy Sosa was thrown out at home trying to score from first base.  This time Sosa was 1-19 to score, and I picked a 20 for that play and then a 20 for Sasseplate.  The score was now tied at 2-2 for the 7th inning stretch.  Morgan got the first two outs in the bottom of the 7th before Keith Miller singled, Dave Magadan walked, and Howard Johnson doubled Miller home.  Chicago attempted two-out rallies in the both of the 8th and 9th innings, but just came up short.  Several players had 2 hits- Magadan, Johnson, and Jefferies for NY, and Brooks and Salazar for the Cubs.

Final Score: New York 3, Chicago 2
WP- Terry 6-3, LP- Morgan 12-12, SV- Simons (2)
HR- Jefferies (12)

G3 was another verse- same as the first (two verses).  For the 2nd time in 3 games, NY shut out the Cubs. Eric King (7 2/3 4 0 0 1 3) was remarkable, and Scott Terry matched Simons from the game before with his 2nd save of the season.  King also helped himself at the bat.  He drove home the game's first run with an RBI single inthe 5th, and DickSchofield's 6th inning bases-loaded walk provided NY with a helpful insurance run.  Speaking of walks, the fact the Mets drew 8 walks in 8 innings provided extra baserunners to score because the hits were even, 4-4.  Dave Magadan went 2-for-3 with a walk as the Mets' leadoff hitter, and was the only player in this game with multiple hits.

Final Score: New York 2, Chicago 0
WP- King 6-6, LP- Castillo 5-6, SV- Terry (2)
HR- none

G4 The Cubs unleased all or its fury from the first 3 games at the Mets in the finale.  When it was all over, Chicago had 12 runs on 16 hits and 5 walks and despite being caught stealing 3 times and hitting into a double play, still left 6 runners on base.  Leadoff man Mark Grace was the biggest beneficiary of all the scoring.  He went 3-for-5 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI.

Final Score: Chicago 12, New York 4
WP- Kile 5-13, LP- Gooden 11-12, SV- Assenmacher (20)
HR- Dawson (32), Sasser (5), Strawberry (27), Grace (9)
