Subject: Blue Jays @ Yankees

Another underachieving road week, another nail in the Blue Jays' 1991 coffin.  Now we can't even take a series from the last place team in the division, as we waged our weekly battle with the split cards and (as usual) lost badly....

Game 1: The series started out well enough, as Rod Nichols took a break from his monstrous underachievement to finally live up to his moderate expectations -- and more.  Nichols scattered 6 singles and walked 1 and registered his first shutout in three years.  Final score: 6-0.  The Jays jumped all over NYA starter Andy Hawkins early and often, but LOBbed way more than we scored all day long.  Nichols' fine outing rendered that lack of clutch performance a moot point.

Joe Carter homered twice and drove in 3 for the visitors; Ivan Calderon added a home run and scored 3 times.

============================================

Game 2: NYA starter Dave "The Hit Machine" Eiland (against whom the league is hitting .311 with a .900 OPS) tossed his first complete game in 23 starts this season and saved his finest outing for the Jays.  Final score: 7-5.  Eiland scattered 9 hits, walked nobody and fanned 8.

The key to the contest, aside from Eliand's masterpiece, came in the NYA 4th after Toronto starter David Wells had already choked away a 3-0 lead.  Roberto Kelly led off with a Si 1, lo 2-20.  That most surgically precise of split cards came through against Wells and the Jays, and 2 critical runs scored before the side was retired.

Bob MacDonald made his debut for Toronto and tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief before allowing an insurance gopher, thereby earning his Arson Squad credential.

============================================

Game 3: Well, well, look who's here: our old friend Jimmy Key, taking the mound against his ex-mates to see if he can screw them out of the pennant race.  Or would he pitch the way he SO often did as a member of the Jays?

Coming as no surprise whatsoever, Key had just about the best outing of his life: 9 IP, 6 hits, 0 walks, 6 K's, no gophers, 1 run.

Coming as a *tremendous* surprise, Todd Stottlemyre did even better: 9 IP, 3 hits, no runs; Jays somehow win 1-0 and keep our diminishing playoff hopes alive for the moment.

============================================

Game 4: With all of the batting practice pitchers who went out there this series -- and pitched like Cy Young -- finally one of them behaved the way he is supposed to.  Unfortunately, that pitcher was Toronto's hilariously underachieving Jason Grimsley, forced to the mound due to our suddenly depleted (Tom Candiotti) and exhausted (Charlie Leibrandt, Dave Stieb, etc.) top-ranked pitching staff.

Grimsley was given an early 3-0 lead, but blew that in record time thanks to *TWO* timely split card ballpark gophers off the bat of a 9th-place hitter who had not homered even once so far in 1991.  The Tigers owe Damon Berryhill a nice Christmas gift this year.

The Jays had a chance at an easy ballpark home run of our own that would have tied the game in the late innings, but naturally failed to get a good split card though many were available.  Final score: 6-4.

With the NYA bullpen being either woefully ineffective or just tired, Melido Perez tossed New York's third consecutive complete game of the series.

Alan
