Keeping with the holiday spirit, the Padres turn in a Dr. Seuss performance. The 3 words that best describe them, " and I quote, are stink, stank, stunk" (needs to be said in your best Boris Karloff voice).
game 1: Bruce Hurst's nosedive in the 2nd half continues. He pitched fairly well, but being a Padre had to give up a home run (ok 2) among the 6 hits he allowed. The Padres had nothing going through the first 7 before Tony Gwynn cracked a 2 run bp homer in the 8th. Not enough as the Braves won 3-2.
game 2: Mullinicks homered in the 3rd to give the Padres a brief lead. I say brief because Santiago's fielding error (he of the iron glove 1e5 rating) allowed 2 of the 3 runs allowed in the bottom of the inning to be unearned. That was the scoring and Benes took a tough 3-1 loss.
game 3: Braves scored three times in the first, including on a double steal (we actually threw out the guy at 2nd this time). The only suspense left at that point would be how bad the Padres could get screwed, offensively and defensively. While pretty much avoiding the Padres pitchers card, the Braves seemed to find every hit on their card. The few times they rolled on Jones' card, they got x play singles as the defense was atrocious. Offensively, the Padres rarely got a roll in a column that had a hit chance. In fact, the Padres had just 3 splits for the entire game, two of which were the first and last batters of the game. None were successful as for the first time I can ever remember, a team that I ran offensively was NO HIT. Padres did manage 5 walks in the game off Avery. Braves won easily 6-0.
game 4: Padres made sure there wasn't a 2nd no hitter as they got 3 hits and 2 runs in the first inning. Impressed by that output, the offense took the rest of the game off, getting 5 more hits though. Braves got 1 back in the first and used a hbp and 4 singles to score 3 times in the 4th to take the lead. The game ended with runners on 2nd and 3rd and McGriff getting a clutch out instead of the tying single. Braves get the sweep with a 4-2 win.
Series was so pathetic that the Padres had more LOB than hits in the series (28-22). The Braves left the same number on base but had 39 hits for the series.
