Subject: BAA @ BOA Week 22

The Orioles went to Boston needing three wins to nail down their first winning season since 1985, and got those three wins by the skin of their collective teeth.

Good luck to all playoff teams, and thanks for a fun rollercoaster of a season.

Game 1: BAA 4, BOA 3 (10)

Boston’s Bob Ojeda and Baltimore’s Mike Mussina squared off in a pitchers’ duel.  Each team had one hit through four scoreless innings.  In the 5th, Baltimore took a 1-0 lead on a rare homer by Craig Biggio, and Ojeda left in the 6th down 2-0 thanks to an RBI single by Mike Devereaux.   Mussina took a one-hit shutout into the seventh, but gave up three hits, including a costly homer by Rob Deer that put the Bosox up 3-2, but Cal Ripken doubled in a run in the 8th to take Mussina off the hook.  The O’s bullpen looked shaky but made it to extras, and Ripken struck again with a 10th inning single to drive in Devereaux.  Gregg Olson notched his 28th save.

Game 2: BAA 6, BOA 3

After the red-hot leading MVP contender Ripken singled off leading Cy Young contender Roger Clemens with two out in the first, Chito Martinez went deep for a 2-0 Baltimore lead.  Juan Bell (.156) added an RBI single in the second.  In the 4th, Scott Cooper tripled off O’s starter Jim Abbott in a two-run Red Sox rally.  Ripken homered in the 5th for a 4-2 lead, but Tom Brunansky’s single in the 7th off reliever Ben McDonald made it a one-run game again.  A Chris Hoiles double in the 8th sparked a two-run rally for a 6-3 lead, and the O’s bullpen muddled through for the win.

Game 3:  BOA 4, BAA 1

The first batter to face O’s starter Charles Nagy, Ellis Burks, promptly homered to give the Red Sox a quick lead.  Boston added a run on a third inning groundout and took a 4-0 lead in the 6th on a Brunansky homer.  Meanwhile, Boston starter Kevin Morton gave up just three hits in six shutout innings, even shutting down Ripken twice with runners in scoring position.  Hoiles went deep in the 9th to spoil the shutout.

Game 4: BAA 9, BOA 8

Hoiles homered again, this time a two-run shot, as the Orioles put up four runs in the 2nd inning off Boston’s Dave Otto.  Brunansky countered with a solo homer in the bottom of the 2nd off Bob Milacki, who spent most of his five IP narrowly averting disaster.  In the 4th, the light-hitting Juan Bell got his second hit of the game and scored on a Ripken double, but Phil Plantier countered with an RBI single.  Leo Gomez jacked one in the 6th to make the score 6-2 in the Orioles’ favor.  Milacki gave way to Mark Williamson; 13 pitches and one Bell error later, the game was tied 6-6 as Phil Plantier doubled in two runs and Rob Deer added a two-run shot.  After Gomez hit a one-out single in the 8th, the O’s made a key decision by bringing in Luis Mercedes to run for Gomez.  With two out, Devereaux singled and Deer’s errant attempt to throw Mercedes out helped Baltimore to a 3-run rally capped by another Ripken RBI single.  Deer quickly atoned with a two-run homer, cutting the Orioles lead to 9-8 in the 8th.   Gregg Olson pitched a rare 1-2-3 9th for his third save of the series and 30th of the season.

Playing due to others’ usage issues, Bell upped his average from .156 to .205 during the series.  Ripken went 9-for 18 with a homer, two doubles, and 6 RBI – but Rob Deer got 6 RBI’s in only 9 at-bats, because three of his four hits left the yard.
