Subject: Blue Jays @ Tigers, game 163

With the 1991 regular season extended to a 1-game playoff, the Blue Jays flew to Detroit where Juan Guzman opposed Bill Gullickson in an online contest.

The game started well for Toronto when Bill (e0) Gullickson fumbled Robbie Alomar's weak grounder and the play was scored as a single. Ivan Calderon drew a rare walk from Gullickson and John Olerud & Dave Winfield delivered 2-out singles and the visitors had a quick 2-0 lead.

Cecil Fielder walked to open the DEA second but clogged up the basepaths for Todd Benzinger's and Lloyd Moseby's singles, and Guzman got the Tigers to LOB the bases-loaded when Jose Vizcaino calmly scooped up speedy Milt Cuyler's x-grounder.

Toronto had a golden opportunity to extend the 2-0 lead in the third when we got 2 RISP with nobody out.  Olerud lined out; Winfield hit a short fly; Parrish whiffed.  Would this be a bad omen?

We rolled merrily along nonetheless: a double and a single opened the TOA 5th and this time a sac fly plated one of them.  3-0.  Kelly Gruber was hit by a Gullickson slowball in the 6th and scored on Devo White's 2-out single.  4-0.

Guzman had allowed just 2 hits through the first five frames and he opened the DEA 6th by blowing away Mickey Tettleton on 4 pitches.

And then HAL remembered just who was playing here today.

Fielder doubled and Lou Whitaker followed with a walk; it seemed like Cecil might clog things up again when Benzinger singled and Fielder had to stop and catch his breath at third base.

Daryl Boston pinch-hit for Travis Fryman and, with the Jays willing to concede one run, did so when Boston hit a gb(C) roller to Alomar and he made the play at first.  4-1, and the Jays needed just one more out to end the threat.

Detroit sent Scott Livingstone to the plate in place of Lloyd Moseby and Livingstone rolled an x-grounder to Vizcaino -- who booted it for a single.  Here we go again.

But even that still left Guzman with a 4-2 lead; after he walked Cuyler to load the bases Guzman was permitted to view the rest of the contest from the clubhouse.

Enter Rod Nichols to face Tony Phillips; Phillips was less than pleased to find that actually a different lefty would facing Nichols.  That task was left to Matt Nokes, and HAL focused his laser beam right on Nichols' weakest spot.  In the blink of an eye, Nokes had cleared the bases with a double and Toronto's 4-0 lead was suddenly a 5-4 deficit.

Showing the kind of fortitude and resiliency the 1991 Toronto Blue Jays have become known for, the Jays went 6-up, 6-down against Gullickson in the 7th and 8th.

Finally in the 9th, we showed our final signs of life in the 1991 season: White walked with one out and raced to third on Calderon's single.  That was Gullickson's 131st and last pitch of the day, and he was replaced by closer Mike Henneman.

Needing only a sac fly to tie the game, Joe Carter tried to do just that -- lofting a fly to Mitch '3e9' Webster in right field.  The x-chart says that a sac fly -- or better -- to a 3e9 occurs on every split card from 1-16.

In keeping with the Blue Jays' season, Carter got an 18.  Nobody moved.

John Olerud had a chance to be the hero by plating the tying run from scoring position with 2 outs in the 9th.  He fanned.  Final score: 5-4.

Congrats to the Tigers on winning the 1991 A.L. East and good luck in the ALCS against the Seattle Mariners!

Alan

P.S.  There have been 784 team-seasons in Smiley and Pre-Smiley from 1949 to 1991. The 1991 Toronto Blue Jays had established a new record coming into game 163, becoming the one team out of those 784 to have the worst offensive performance (relative to their overall performance) in clutch situations, losing a whopping 160 points in terms of OBP+SLG.  With the single exception of Ivan Calderon, it was truly a team effort.  And don't forget the bullpen.
