WEB GEMS- Bot 5th: Tom Haller blocked the plate, saving a run!

Right fielder Roberto Clemente had 4 hits as the Pittsburgh Pirates outscored
the San Francisco Giants 7 to 5.

In the bottom of the 5th inning Pittsburgh scored 3 runs when they had 4 base
hits. The big moment was provided by Bill Virdon who came through for the
home fans when he laced a one-base hit which was good for two runs. San
Francisco had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Bob Sadowski(2-4) allowed 5 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Howie Reed gained credit for his 1st save. Orlando Pena(1-5) ended
up with the loss. He was unable to control the Pittsburgh offense and
allowed 14 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.

San Francisco's manager was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It
is really hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to some, but
it is easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones that just
barely get away that hurt so much - like this one!'

The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the San Francisco Giants by a score of 6 to 3
at Forbes Field.

Pittsburgh brought 5 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 2nd inning
when they had 6 base hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. San
Francisco made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the
needed runs across.

The win was credited to Vern Law(2-3) who went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 3
runs. Law got help from Al McBean who earned his 5th save. Juan
Marichal(4-3) took the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 5 runs
in 2 innings.
