Right fielder Roberto Clemente had 4 hits as the Pittsburgh Pirates outscored the San Francisco Giants 7 to 5. In the bottom of the 5th inning Pittsburgh scored 3 runs when they had 4 base hits. The big moment was provided by Bill Virdon who came through for the home fans when he laced a one-base hit which was good for two runs. San Francisco had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. Bob Sadowski(2-4) allowed 5 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Howie Reed gained credit for his 1st save. Orlando Pena(1-5) ended up with the loss. He was unable to control the Pittsburgh offense and allowed 14 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings. San Francisco's manager was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is really hard to lose this kind of a game. The San Francisco Giants halted a 5 game slide and won by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2. The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings. San Francisco won the hard fought contest in the 10th inning. Rusty Staub hit a bases-empty home run (his 2nd of the season). San Francisco finished with 13 hits while Pittsburgh ended up with 8. Eddie Fisher(3-2) got the win allowing no runs in 2 innings. Ed Roebuck recorded the save, his 10th. Bob Humphreys(2-2) suffered the loss in relief. 'Thankfully we got ourselves a win', Fisher said. 'It's great to be back on the winning side of things.' |
