Subject: Reds @ Padres
In the recent past, the Reds have had enough talent to overcome our miserable luck. One fluky inning in game 1 aside, that no longer appears to be the case. For the rest of this series, Cincy's offense was totally useless and our pitchers approached record-setting underachievement as the Padre hitters (and defense) approached perfection. We even threw in a couple of patented late inning chokes just to prove that the Reds are in mid-season form already.... Game 2: Ace Jose Rijo had a joke of a start (4 IP, 10 hits, 6 runs) and the Arson Squad chipped in too though their assistance was hardly required. As in game 1 our luck started off terrible. Unlike game 1 it stayed that way -- for the remainder of the series. Johnny Bench Walters put up a 4 1 3 3 line including a gift double from the hit & run chart and Jim Jones stopped drinking the Kool-Aid and had a start that was good enough to win even without massive support. Final score: 9-3. For the second day in a row, a rookie (Cincy's Willie Greene this time) homered in his first major-league at bat. It was the lone highlight of the game for the suddenly helpless Reds. ==================================================== Game 3: Greg Swindell hooked up in a pitchers duel with Andy Benes, and got the worst of it thanks to a timely pair of gophers -- one by Benes himself. The ridiculously inept Cincy offense scored only once today, and even that was not due to our own efforts. But Garry Sheffield's 2-base error with a runner on second charitably tied the game 1-1 in the 7th. It remained that way until we pulled off bottom-of-the-ninth choke #1 (of many) for 1992 when Tony Gwynn's 2-12 roll and split card right at the limit produced a cheap 2-run BPHR. At least it wasn't the pitcher this time. Final score: 3-1. ==================================================== Game 4: Searching for a new way to exhibit our lucklessness, the Reds came up with the idea of hitting into FOUR critical double plays today, while Unhittable Rob Dibble came into a tie game in the 7th and gave up game-losing RBIs to the first two batters he faced, both runs charged to understandably unappreciative starter Tim Belcher (6.1 IP, 9 hits, 6 runs). Final score: 6-4. Cincy actually had a 2-0 lead via back-to-back solo homers from Joe Oliver and Paul O'Neill in the second, but HAL got super-surgical opening the SDN 4th (triple, single, double, double, single) and gave them a 4-2 lead. The Reds had the audacity to resist, as Oliver homered again to tie the score in the 6th. But that only set the stage for Mr. Unhittable's second highly ineffective outing in 4 games. Alan |
