Subject: Opening Day marathon report from the Homerdome
The Blue Jays got unexpected power from our DP combination and managed to offset shoddy defense and even worse closer performance from the bullpen (some things never change) to narrowly prevail over the Twins by the score of 5-4 in 13 innings. Starters Todd Stottlemyre and Scott Erickson combined to allow just 4 runs (2 apiece, and 1 unearned for each too) in 14 innings. The Jays took a very surprising lead in the 3rd when blown-x specialist Manny Lee, who had 0 homers in over 300 AB in 1991, homered in his first at bat of 1992! A pair of TOA blown x's (neither by Lee, he'd add one later though) conspired to donate the tying run to the Twins seconds later. Stottlemyre booted an easy grounder to open the frame, and with MNA showing no sign of coming up with the clutch hit, HAL had a blown-x wild pitch with 2 outs (natch) score the run. The Twins got another unearned run, though it wasn't scored that way, in the 5th. Jeff Kent gave up a timely "single" + error with 2 outs in the frame, and this time a clutch hit was immediately forthcoming and the home team had a momentary 2-1 lead. In the top of the 6th we got our unearned run when Brian Harper's throw on Joe Carter's SB attempt went awry and Dave Winfield scored from third on the error. Middle reliever Rusty Meacham was perfect for the Twins, as he like all MNA pitchers limited the Jays (8 hits in 13 innings) to little aside from Worst Possible Columns. Jesse Orosco's TOA debut was a scoreless one, but shaky. So he's halfway there. The other half of Toronto's DP combo, Robbie Alomar, solo-homered off of Mark Guthrie in the 10th to give the visitors the lead, and Unhittable Duane Ward came on to close it out. In typical fashion, the Toronto closer with the fantastic card was demolished. Ward coughed up 2 singles, a walk, and FOUR stolen bases in the bottom of the 10th. Thanks to a CS among all the SB, Ward somehow limited the damage to a single run but is still on pace for 162 blown saves in 1992. In the 13th, Steve Buechele's error opened the gates for a pair of runs when John Olerud came up with a clutch double that made the score 5-3. Also in typical fashion, Ward choked up a gopher to the first batter of the MNA 13th and was forcibly removed from the mound, if not the active roster. At tremendous risk, Tom Henke was summoned and only allowed one baserunner -- NOT a home run! -- among the 3 outs he obtained. Final score: 5-4. The Jays blew 4 x-plays to Minny's 2, but theirs turned out to be more costly on this day. Minnesota apparently reincarnated John McGraw to manage this year, stealing a probable team-record EIGHT bases and being caught just that one time. Ward actually got the W thanks to his masterful 5 for 12 with a walk and 8 total base performance. Bravo. Alan |
