Subject: Blue Jays @ Twins
After winning the opener, it looked like the Jays were going to do a swan dive (a la the Reds) but some decent pitching and offense overcame that urge.... Game 2: Bobby Witt's TOA debut went pretty well for a guy who died during third-inning surgery. Witt may have set a personal mark by tossing 7 consecutive innings without walking a batter and he allowed just 8 total bases (6 singles, 1 double). But 5 of those 8 TB, plus an HBP and a wild pitch, were all fortuitously crammed into the space of 5 batters in Minnesota's 4-run third. Final score: 5-2. MNA starter John Smiley easily handled the somnambulent Toronto offense as, like the Reds, we managed to erase by GIDPs a very high % of our baserunners. The efficient Twins offense LOBbed only 2 today. ===================================================== Game 3: Lots of offense today from both teams -- especially Toronto -- but no such efficiency (26 combined LOB, 14 by the Jays). Minnesota starter Kevin Tapani was vanquished during Toronto's 4-run second inning thanks to homers by Joe Carter & Pat Borders, but Toronto ace Juan Guzman equaled Tapani's feebleness in record time and one inning later our 4-0 lead was a 4-4 tie. Guzman settled down a little, the MNA middle relievers effectively mowed down the Jays, and the tie held until the 7th. With 2 on and 1 out, Carter homered again and provided the winning margin for reliever Jesse Orosco. We tacked on 2 insurance runs and Henke closed it out but wasn't eligible for a save. Final score: 9-4. The Jays racked up *30* total bases to Minnesota's 14, and drew 7 walks, but our LOB-fest caused the game to remain close until the late innings. ===================================================== Game 4: Although you wouldn't know it from this game, the MNA defense outplayed Toronto's allegedly-excellent D in this series according to x-percentages. But today the Twins made 5 errors, good for 6 unearned runs and let battered starter Jack Morris and the Clutchless Wonders of the Toronto offense off the hook. Final score: 8-5. Morris (6 IP, 9 singles, 1 double, no walks) blew leads of 1-0 and 3-1 and the Twins had a 5-3 lead after 7 as starter Sid Fernandez was pitching decently. Then Steve Buechele committed his first of 3 errors in the final 2 innings as Jeff Kent was leading off the TOA 8th. Two singles followed, cutting the deficit to 5-4. A '4' in LF made a successful x-play -- defying major odds, it wasn't even a sac fly -- and it was probable that the Jays would LOB the tying run at third and go on to lose. But John Olerud got that elusive sac fly to tie the game, Buechele booted Ed Sprague's grounder and PH Derek Bell plated the winning run with a single. Another Buechele error helped the Jays to 2 runs in the 9th. Final score: 8-5, with Mike Timlin getting the relief win via an unusually strong outing. TOA pitchers, led by Witt's example, issued only 8 free passes this series and fanned 32 Twins. After Minnesota's 1911-esque 8 for 9 base stealing performance in game 1, TOA catchers got the message and erased 7 of 12 would-be thieves in games 2-4. Alan |
