Padres smack the ball around the park but so do the Braves in an offensive series
game 1: Things did not start well for Andy Benes as the Braves got 1b,1b, 2b to start the game. Benes settled down and got out of the inning with just the 1 run scoring. He would allow just 5 more hits in the next 6 innings. The top of the 2nd was very similar as the Padres got 2b,1b,1b, walk to tie the game and load the bases. A much expected double play followed scoring 1 run but that was it for the inning. Fernandez and McGriff had rbi doubles in the 3rd to stretch the lead to 3. Reynolds doubled the lead with a 3 run homer in the 4th, ending Doug Drabek's day. (reynolds missed a 2nd homer later because he is a w). Padres went on to win easily 9-2.
game 2: Apparently it will be Bruce Hurst's year to be victimized by the long ball (or at least keeping the seat warm until Greg Harris can reclaim it when he is activated). Hurst made his 2nd start of the year and had his 2nd start with 3 homers allowed (2 of them were bp). Padres started the game with double,single, single+error to put 2 runs on the board. They could not bring that 3rd runner home though. Braves tied it in the 3rd with a 2 out 2 run bp homer by Davis. Hurst's 2 run double capped a 3 run 4th and the Padres were back on top. HR-2b-HR in the 5th tied it back up. A pinch hit triple by DS (refuse to write his name) gave the Braves the lead in the 6th and they held on for the 6-5 win. Padres had 1st and 3rd in the 9th with 1 out but a gbB got the runner at home before an x play groundout ended it.
game 3: Continuing the string of bad first innings, Gwynn reached on a 2 out error and Sheffield got a bp homer to give the Padres a quick 2-0 lead. The Braves came right back with 5 of the first 6 batters getting hits. Gant's bases loaded triple was the key. Babe Ruth's (oops I meant Tony Gwynn) 4th homer of the season cut the lead to 1 in the 5th. A lead off double in the 6th was wasted but a leadoff double in the 7th scored to tie the game. Stayed that way until the 9th when with 2 outs, Justice worked a walk on a 6-7 roll. Gant stepped up and got a 6-5 roll (3b 1 single the rest). Needless to say the game ended on that roll.
Apparently San Diego has reincarnated the 89 Red Sox as they hit 19 doubles on the week (to go with 9 hr) and are slugging .518 as a team. The pitchers have as many xbh and rbi's as they do strikeouts (3) so far. On the negative side. SD has allowed 7 homers, all but 1 by Hurst.
