Subject: Blue Jays & Brewers

Toronto's only win in this series came in large part via a player we picked up off the scrap heap 4 hours ago, although we did get outstanding starting pitching in every game (as did the Brewers).  Meanwhile, ace arsonist Duane Ward is in typical form, which is great news for every A.L. team other than the one he chokes for....

Game 1: Cal Eldred's major league debut was a good news-bad news deal for the Brewers.  The good news was obvious.  The bad news is that no matter what Eldred does the rest of his career, it's all downhill now -- he will never again pitch as well as he did today.  At least not until he faces the Jays next time.

Eldred tossed a complete game, allowing ZERO (legitimate) hits until a leadoff single in the 9th. Jeff McKnight's leadoff double in the 3rd was a blown-x by Greg Vaughn.  Robby Alomar walked to open the game, and it was his single that opened the 9th; in between we got absolutely nothing, though the Jays twice in the first 3 frames had a RISP with 0 outs.  Scoring just once would have been very important.

Charlie Leibrandt pitched 7 innings and held the Brewers to 1 run, which was precisely enough to lose.  Final score: 1-0, the lone run coming on a 5th inning sac fly by Robin Yount which immediately followed Kevin Seitzer's fortuitous split-card triple.

===========================================

Game 2: Exhibit #198036 in the "Nobody Chokes Like The Blue Jays" case, today's disaster courtesy of -- who else? -- Duane Ward, with considerable assistance from closer emeritus Tom Henke.  Starters Tim Fortugno and Bill Wegman performed very well (15.1 IP, 17 baserunners, 3 runs), particularly so in the case of Toronto's Fortugno.  The young phenom was removed after 7 innings with a 2-1 lead.

He still had that lead with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th.

And then, he didn't.  Down to their final out, Milwaukee's Derrick May came up with a pinch-double off of Henke which plated Seitzer from second.  Duane Ward handled the 10th, and it was all over in 2 batters, neither of whom Ward saw fit to retire.

Toronto's ace closer with the card that should permit opponents nowhere near even a .150 batting average, now has choked up 10 hits in 24 AB (.417) and slugging percentage of a mere .583.  Ward's efforts in 1991 (plus a lineup chock full of clutch chokers) lost us the A.L. East pennant by one game.  Will this be that "one game" in '92?  Or will the decisive choke be one of the many yet to come?  We'll know in 19 weeks.

===========================================

Game 3: Bobby Witt's pinpoint control took just one start to evaporate, but he made up for it by not allowing many hits.  In other words, he pitched exactly as he is expected to.  For the third straight game, both teams got solid outings from their starters, but for a change the Jays were smart enough not to use the bullpen.  Witt made our meager early attack hold up for a 3-1 win over Jaime Navarro, who was untouchable after giving up the early runs.

Scrap Heap McKnight got the scoring underway with his first major-league homer (solo) in the 2nd.  Witt gave the run back an inning later when he packed 3 of the 5 hits he allowed into the space of 4 MLA batters, but escaped a bases-loaded jam after issuing a two-out walk to load them.

A 2-out rally in the TOA 4th completed the day's scoring; Olerud and Borders back-to-back doubled, and McKnight singled home Borders.

Scott Livingstone's single in the 8th was the only baserunner for the Jays in the final 5 frames, and Witt somehow escaped *another* bases-loaded jam in the MLA 6th -- this one with NO outs -- when Yount fanned and Surhoff GIDPed.
