Subject: Chicago @ New York

The two big-market teams in the NL East met at Shea with much more scoring than would be expected. The Cubs could have possibly swept this seriesif Chicago's manager had better handled pitching changes...  or if the Cubs would have just pitched better from the 5th inning onward.

G1 For 6 innings Darryl Kile (6 1/3 4 3 3 4 5) and David Cone (6 1/3 8 2 2 1 5) hooked up in a scoreless duel.  However, in the 7th, neither pitcher could get a 2nd out before running into trouble and being replaced.  The Cubs broke through in the top of the 7th on a Dwight Smith RBI double and a Glenallen Hill PH RBI-single.  New York answered emphaticallyin its half of the 7th on Dave Magadan's RBI double, Len Dykstra's 2-run single, and the capper- Bobby Bonilla's 3-run HR.  Reliever Jeff Robinson (12.15 ERA) entered with a 2-1 lead and promptly allowed a single, another single, anda home run to the first 3 batters.  Jeff Innis and John Franco combined to allow just one baserunner over the final 2 innings in closing out the win for NY.

Final Score: New York 6, Chicago 2
WP- Parrett 1-0, LP- Kile 0-2
HR- Bonilla (2)

G2 2nd verse, worse than the 1st (for the Cubs).  This time Chicago built a 5-0 lead after 2 innings by combining 4 walks and 4 doubles off of Dwight Gooden (7 7 5 4 5 4).  However, the Cubs' Frank Castillo (5 5 3 3 1 0) couldn't find the stamina to pitch well after his first 4 shutout innings.  This game it was Rich Delucia who brought the kerosene from the bullpen.  The first two batters he faced to beginthe 6th were Bobby Bonilla (double) and Dave Hollins (HR).  That tied the game, 5-5, and one inning later when Jim Bullinger uncorked a wild pitch with 2 outs, it allowed Dykstra to score the eventual winning run.  Chicago had more hits, 9-7, and more walks, 5-4, but somehow let Gooden off the hook for the loss, and instead handed him a victory.  Mark Grace led both teams with 3 hits.

Final Score: New York 6, Chicago 5
WP- Gooden 1-0, LP- Delucia 0-1, SV- Franco (3)
HR- Hollins (2)

G3 For once Chicago got a pitching performance worthy of it's lineup production.  Today's story was Mike Morgan (9 4 0 0 3 6).  He didn't allow a runner to 2nd base until the 4th inning, and the 6th inning (2nd and 3rd with 2 outs) was the only instance when he seemed to be in any trouble.  Meanwhile, the Cubs pounded out 19 hits while only accepting 1 walk.  17 of the 19 hits were singles so that might explain why Chicago scored only 9 runs total.  Shawon Dunston and Bip Roberts each led the way with 4-for-5 performances.  Dave Magadan had 2 of the Mets' 4 hits.

Final Score: Chicago 9, New York 0
WP- Morgan 1-2, LP- Schourek 1-1
HR- none

G4 Chicago provided one more uprising- this time plating 10 early runs off NY's Jack Armstrong (5 1/3 7 10 10 3 4) by scoring in 5 of the first 6 innings.  New York tried to make things interesting by scoring 3 late runs, but never could get really close on the scoreboard.  Chicago's Pete Harnisch (5 6 3 3 3 4) lowered his ERA to 6.32 to pick up the win.  Ryne Sandberg led Cubs' hitters with 2 home runs and 5 RBI.  The Mets' Dave Hollins raised his average to .405 by going 3-for-3 with another long ball.

Final Score: Chicago 10, New York 6
WP- Harnisch 1-0, LP- Armstrong 0-1
HR- Sandberg 2 (2), D.Smith (2), Dykstra (1), Hollins (3)
