Subject: Reds @ Dodgers

After a dismal first week of 1922, the Reds came to life a little and outhit the Dodgers nearly by 100% (39-21, and probably half of L.A's hits were on blown x-plays) -- so of course every game was razor-close....

Game 1: Chris Hammond's season debut was going well: he had a 3-0 lead in the fifth when suddenly HAL had us play Keystone Cops defense for the rest of the series.  Starting by scoring a run in the 5th on zero hits, the Dodgers erased every bit of that 3-0 lead.  Wild pitches and blown-x's galore helped L.A.'s cause immensely.

With the score still 3-3, defensive sub Paul O'Neill had no choice but to face a lefty reliever with 2 on and 2 out in the 9th -- and came through with a double!  Greg Harris closed down the Dodgers in their half to preserve the 5-3 win.  Cincy outhit L.A. by a mere 14-7 but clutch hits aside from O'Neill's were extinct, and we forfeited a few runners on the bases to keep the contest uncomfortably tight.

=============================================

Game 2: Like Hammond, Tim Belcher was given an early 3-0 lead and.... guess what?  Actually, Belcher only gave 2 of them back and the Reds tacked on a late insurance run for a 4-2 win in another squeaker.  Belcher allowed just 4 baserunners in 6 IP, but the Dodgers were efficient again in plating the few runners they got.  Three Cincy pitchers combined on a 4-hitter, and reserve catcher Ed Taubensee doubled home a pair in the 2nd and also had the insurance RBI in the 8th.

=============================================

Game 3: Pedro Astacio made his first major league start for Los Angeles and just about did an "Eldred" on the Reds, hooking up with Kevin Gross in a pitchers duel.  Cincy broke on top via Paul O'Neill's solo homer in the 4th, and that was all until HAL went super-surgical on the Cincy D for a change in the sixth, our *three* blown-x plays giving L.A. 3 runs, two laughably classified as "earned".

HAL returned the favor in the Cincy 8th, when defensive replacement Jamie Quirk at 3B was exposed as a fraud by blowing 2 x-plays, but we could only score one and that would be a critical failure.

Speaking of which: down by a run in the 9th, the Reds opened the frame with consecutive pinch-singles that put runners at the corners.  Surely we would score at least one.

Wrong.  The runner on third never moved.  Final score: 3-2.  One unearned run and a minor 10-4 advantage in the LOB column made all the difference.

=============================================

Game 4: Proving that yesterday's 9th inning was anything but a fluke for the Reds, we did the EXACT SAME THING in the top of the first today.  1st & 3rd, no outs.... no score.

Meanwhile HAL lasered in on lead-glove Jeff Branson at SS, having him blow x-plays twice during the first 3 batters of the day, and the Dodgers had a gift 2-0 lead immediately against unhittable Cincy starter Dennis Rasmussen.

Taubensee scored from second on Bill Doran's single to cut the disadvantage to 2-1 and we took the lead in the sixth on a pair of two-out hits (!!!) before LOBbing the bases loaded.  Exit Ras and enter Harris, and the Cincy Charity Squad went right to work (error, walk, wild pitch) but Harris got the elusive final out without allowing a run and went on to complete 4 hitless innings and notch his second save of the series.

Rasmussen got the win in his first, and probably last, start as a Red by allowing just 2 legitimate hits in 5 IP.

Taubensee and O'Neill were pretty much the entire Cincinnati offense all series long as far as producing runs, combining with generally decent pitching to overcome atrocious defense and our usual misfortune with the split cards (including baserunning).
