Subject: Chicago @ San Diego

The Cubs traveled west to face the Fathers, and both teams' lineups put on a show.  When the smoke cleared, both clubs had their time inthe sun.

G1 The opening game was the one and only pitching duel in this series.  After 5 innings, neither team had dented the scoreboard.  In the 6th, Chicago's Dwight Smith beat out an infield single and moved to 2nd when Ken Oberkfell's throw went in the stands behind 1st.  After a Pete Harnisch strikeout, leadoff hitter Bip Roberts singled home theCubs' leftfielder and Chicago led, 1-0.  Harnisch (5 1/3 3 3 0 1 3) was then burned by Roberts in the bottom of the 6th as the diminutive 3B booted Andy Benes'1-out groundball.  Chad Curtis then singled and Tony Fernandez walked to load the bases.  Jeff Robinson was summoned and retired Tony Gwynn on a sac fly for an RBI and a tie score, 1-1.  Heathcliff Slocumb and his 6R were called upon to retire Gary Sheffield, but the Padre cleanup hitter singled in 2 runs to account for the remaining scoring in this game.  Benes (7 4 1 1 0 4) was outstanding and Mike Maddux gave a glimpse of how unhittable he would be the entire series with a2 inning save.

Final Score: San Diego 3, Chicago 1
WP- Benes 2-0, LP- Harnisch 2-1, SV- Maddux (1)
HR- none

G2 Seven total runs were scored in the 1st and 4 more in the 3rd as San Diego built an impresssive early 7-4 lead. However, it wasn't until Gary Sheffield's 2-run HR in the 5th with no one out that I finally had seen enough of starting pitcher Darryl Kile (4 10 9 7 1 0) who happened to surrender 4 homers in all.  Both teams continued to score the last 3 innings (3 runs apiece) but, SanDiego was never really threatened the rest of the way.  Benito Santiago was the biggest bat for the Padres as he hit his first HR, singled, walked and drove in 5 runs with a 2-for-3 day.  Mark Grace did his best to keep Chicago in the game as he hit 2 home runs in the course of a 3-for-5 day.

Final Score: San Diego 12, Chicago 7
WP- Gr.Harris 1-0, LP- Kile 0-3
HR- Fernandez (1), McGriff (4), Santiago (1), Grace 2 (3), Sheffield (3), Sandberg (3)

G3 The Cubs flexed their muscles with a 3-run 1st and a 3-run 3rd inning en route to its first win in the series.  The Padres scored in 4 different innings, but could never manage to score more than 1 run any inning.    Mark Grace continued his hot hitting by going 3-for-4 to raise his average to .371, hitting his 3rd homer in 2 games, and driving in4 total runs.  Tony Gwynn was the only Padre to knock home multiple runs as he went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.

Final Score: Chicago 8, San Diego 4
WP- Castillo 1-0, Lefferts 1-2
HR- Dawson (3), Grace (4)

G4 Since both teams had 9 hits, you would think that the final game would have been closer.  However, Chicago grouped all of its 9 hits (and all 5 walks in the first 7 innings which helped propel the Cubs to victory.  Mike Morgan continued to stake his claim as Chicago's 1992 ace (5 6 2 2 0 1) even though he was pulled after 5 innings to save wear-and-tear on his arm.  For one of the rare times this season, the Cubs' bullpen pitched scoreless relief for their entire 4 innings to nail down thewin.  Tony Fernandez went 3-for-4 with a solo HR to lead SD's hitters while Ryne Sandberg went 2-for-4 and homered for the 2nd game out of the last 3 for the Cubs.

Final Score: Chicago 6, San Diego 2
WP- Morgan 3-2, LP- Jones 2-1, SV- Scanlan (3)
HR- Sandberg (4), Fernandez (2)
