Subject: Blue Jays @ Tigers

After an unmitigated disaster in the opener, the Jays rebound to win 3 almost-as-ugly games.  Unlike the first two weeks, the massively underachieving Toronto offense showed up occasionally (until a runner was in scoring position) and the top-ranked pitching in the majors was nowhere in evidence as HAL surgically dismembered one and all, especially in the gopher department.  Detroit pitching fared only slightly better, though....

Game 1: Juan Guzman was highly ineffective (4.1 IP, 11 baserunners) and mop-up man Unhittable Duane Ward was his usual hilarious self (2.2 IP, 7 baserunners, 4 runs, 1 gopher) as the Blue Jays were destroyed in a totally one-sided contest.  Final score: 9-0.  The Jays may have set some kind of record by getting just 3 hits all day off of Hardly-Unhittable Jim Deshaies -- and still finding a way to strand ELEVEN runners.  Establishing a theme, TOA batters went 0 for 9 with RISP.

=========================================

Game 2: Our clutch chokers today batted .417 (10/24) -- as long as there was nobody in scoring position; then they dropped slightly to .177 (3/17).  The 17 at bats shows that we had a ton of baserunners (again) and this time some of them actually scored!  We outhit Detroit by a mere 13-4 so of course the score was incredibly close.  Jack Morris pitched 9 innings, but not a complete game; a sac fly in the 10th finally enabled us to eke out a 4-3 win.  Two of the 4 hits Morris allowed were gophers.  Jesse Orosco (who has pitched as terribly as Ward, but his ERA doesn't show it) tossed a rare effective inning to earn his first save.

=========================================

Game 3: Another double-digit LOB day and another dismembered starting pitcher, but a couple of miracles mixed in:

1.  A late inning comeback!
2.  Which Henke and Ward didn't choke away!!!

Toronto scored in each of the first 3 frames, but Detroit scored just as many and then took a 2-run gopher lead in the 7th which finally caused the exit of brutalized starter Charlie Leibrandt (6.1 IP, 15 baserunners).  As Leibrandt staggered from the mound, the scoreboard showed that Jimmy Key, for whom Leibrandt was traded, is currently leading the A.L. Cy Young award race.  But of course.

Winfield & Alomar opened the TOA 9th with a walk and a double, and after a non-advancing out Kevin McReynolds plated both of them with a single to tie the game.  Henke had held the fort up to that point, so the Jays tempted disaster by summoning Ward again.  He retired the side in order in the 9th and technically (walk, DP) did so again in the 10th.

In between, Manny Lee came up with a tough BP single with 2 outs and Devon White raced home from second with the winning run.  Final score: 6-5 in 10.  Three weeks into 1992, Ward earns save number.... one.

=========================================

Game 4: The Toronto offense had to do it all today -- and did -- because neither the starter nor the bullpen did their jobs.  Bobby Witt blew all but one run of a 6-1 lead and reliever Mike Timlin gophered up 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th, but we had a 7-run lead at the time.  Final score: 12-8.

Little-used catcher Greg Myers had a big day, homering (solo) his first time up, doubling later on and driving in 3.  John Olerud had an even bigger day, putting up a line of 5 1 4 5 including his first home run of 1992.  Even after that stellar day raised his average to a whopping .158, Olerud (like many Jay batters) needs to either hit more or go on a starvation diet in order to be hitting his weight.

Coming into this series, Week 2 hero Jeff McKnight (since demoted) put up 3 "runs created" in 6 at bats.  Olerud, Kent, Livingstone & Lee had combined for 4 runs created -- in 148 plate appearances!  The rookie Kent has one home run this year; every one of his other 23 plate appearances have resulted in outs.

Others who need to diet or hit include Ed Sprague and newly-activated Mike Fitzgerald, who are a combined 1 for 13.

Alan
