Subject: Reds @ Expos
Two very good teams who are off to weak starts met in Montreal, and only the Cincy penchant for monster-choking deprived the visitors of a sweep. For the first two games, our best offense -- in fact our *only* offense -- was the Montreal defense (7 runs scored, 6 unearned).... Game 1: Carlos Baerga donated 4 unearned runs to the Reds, but we were too proud to accept that charity. It looked for a while that Cincy starter Jose Rijo's uninterrupted nightmare 1992 season might finally be interrupted with a break or two, but no such luck. Rijo was given a 3-0 lead before he even took the mound, and the score was 3-1 with 2 outs and nobody on base in the MON 7th. Singles by the #7 and #8 hitters indicated that Rijo had run out of gas. Enter Greg Harris to face PH Sean Berry and -- yes!!! -- the patented "Perfect Sambito"! One batter faced, one critical gopher, one lead totally erased. But the Reds batters weren't done yet, or at least Baerga wasn't. His 2-out error in the 8th tied the game at 4, and Darrin Jackson's double in the CIN 9th plated our only earned run of the day and restored the lead. Until Wildman Harris went to work again. He walked the leadoff batter and sandwiched 2 singles (one of which tied the game) around TWO no-diceroll wild pitches (one of which ended the game), as HAL took no chance that the Montreal batters would fail to deliver the RBI. Final score: Expos 6, Monster Chokers 5. ================================================ Game 2: Greg Swindell tossed a 3-hitter and so did Dennis Martinez, Xavier Hernandez & Jeff Fassero. The Reds scored twice in the 6th on a pair of walks and a pair of 2-base infield errors, neither of them by Baerga. The Reds compensated somewhat for the defensive generosity by coming up small in the clutch, LOBbing 8 runners to the Expos 2 and going 0 for 6 with RISP. ================================================ Game 3: The Reds got a small lead of all earned runs (except one) and clung tenaciously to it despite less than effective mound work, and were always one pitch away from another choke. Chris Hammond was mediocre at best, Rob Dibble allowed baserunners galore, but Dwayne Henry (after loading them) escaped a jam in the 8th and retired the side in the 9th. Final score: 5-3. Hal Morris' pinch home run in the 8th plated the 2 runs which became the winning margin. Ken Hill had a solid start for Montreal and, like Martinez, could easily have attained a better outcome. Busy sabotaging our opponent for a change, HAL momentarily took his boot off the throats of the Cincy defense; we converted 14 of 16 x-chances in this series after a ludicrously bad first two weeks in the field.
