Subject: 3-HOMER GAME: BAA @ BOA Week 3 (plus Week 4 CM)
Baltimore’s last-place offense woke up to hit more homers in three games than they had in the first fourteen. (Or maybe it was just Fenway.) Either way, the Orioles took two of three in Boston. Game 1: BAA 12, BOA 5 The Orioles got two runs off Roger Clemens in the first inning, but could have gotten more if Craig Biggio hadn’t been thrown out at home with no outs (on a 75% chance of scoring.) Baltimore roughed up Clemens even worst in the second, getting two runs off Joe Orsulak’s first homer of the season and two more thanks to back-to-back doubles by Biggio and Cal Ripken. In the 3rd, the O’s made it 7-0 on a sac fly by Ripken, but the Red Sox finally got their first hit – and their first four runs, largely due to Rob Deer’s bases-loaded double. Mike Sharperson’s single chased Clemens in the 4th, but reliever Danny Darwin came in to hold Baltimore to their first scoreless inning. In the fifth, Ripken drove in another run, but Biggio was again thrown out at the plate on a 75% chance. The score was 9-5 after the teams traded runs in the eighth – Baltimore’s on a Chris Hoiles home run, Boston’s on a groundout. A bases-loaded walk and a passed ball helped the O’s tack on two more in the 9th, and despite two hits, a walk, and three Orioles pitchers, Boston was held scoreless in the ninth. Biggio was sheepish after the game despite going 5-for-5 with an HBP, a steal, and two runs scored. His day overshadowed a 4-for-4 day by Boston’s Felix Fermin. (It also made all but the most alert Orioles fans to overlook golden sombreros for both Hoiles and Brady Anderson.) Game 2: BOA 9, BAA 6 Boston drew first blood in the 2nd inning when Junior Ortiz singled in Deer. Brook Jacoby singled in another run in the 3rd for a 2-0 Red Sox lead. in the 4th, Baltimore got on the board in a big way, scoring five runs thanks largely to homers by Hoiles and Biggio, but Boston promptly cut the lead to 5-4 on RBI singles by Phil Plantier and Jody Reed. In the 5th Hoiles doubled in another run, but Deer homered to keep the Orioles’ lead at one run. Boston retook the lead 7-6 in the 6th; Scott Bankhead relieved Baltimore starter Charles Nagy with two out and gave up a bases-loaded single to Brook Jacoby. John Valentin’s two-run blast in the 8th was the icing on the cake for the Red Sox. Game 3: BAA 9, BOA 4 The Orioles jumped on Boston starter Chris Haney for four first-inning runs, on a two-run homer by Mike Devereaux – his first of the season -- and a two-run single by Sharperson. Haney must have felt a sense of déjà vu in the 2nd when Devereaux took him deep again, putting Baltimore up 6-0. The Red Sox got plenty of runners against O’s starter Mike Mussina in six innings, but the closest they came to scoring was in the 6th, when Rob Deer tripled (Deer vs. Moose?) but Devereaux threw him out on the plate on a sac fly attempt. Haney had settled down and was still on the mound in the 7th when Devereaux hit a THIRD homer for a 7-0 Orioles lead. Baltimore’s bullpen was shaky again, as Tom Brunansky’s based-loaded double off Alan Mills highlighted a 4-run Red Sox eighth. In the top of the 9th, a Chico Walker homer not only put Baltimore up 9-4, it also gave Devereaux one more at-bat. Boston brought in Derek Lilliquist, and Devereaux gave the crowd a brief thrill when he flied out to deep center. Struggling Orioles closer Gregg Olson pitched a 1-2-3 9th in a non-save situation.
