Subject: Blue Jays @ Rangers

Despite the fact that few in the massively underachieving Blue Jay lineup can even hit .225, the pitching continues to perform as expected and having 6 more wins than losses in one-run games (narrowly exceeding MLA's +5 mark) isn't hurting either....

Game 1: Several unlikely heroes in this one, as some ridiculous slumps came to a temporary end: Scott Livingstone -- acquired because he allegedly hits better than Kelly Gruber -- rocketed his average all the way to .182 today with a 3 for 5 performance!  Mike Fitzgerald becomes one of our very best hitters (.250) after going 3 for 3 with a homerun.  Tim Fortungo came up with the biggest surprise, a 4-hit (all singles) shutout and a 5-0 win.

================================================

Game 2: Kevin Brown pitched great for Texas and Charlie Leibrandt was doing OK too, but suffered from serious "home field advantage" on the part of the Rangers.  Specifically, they couldn't miss a ballpark single or home run, and we couldn't purchase even one of either.

All of the scoring was confined to a symmetrically disastrous 3 batter stretch in the TEA 4th (gopher, HBP, gopher).  Meanwhile the sputtering Blue Jay offense got only 2 runners as far as second base through 8 innings.

The outcome was apparently not in doubt so Duane Ward had been unusually effective, tossing 2 scoreless innings.  We got runners to 1st & 2nd in the 9th but were down to our last out and still losing 3-0.  Greg Briley then tapped a game-ending roller towards Dickie Thon at short who raced in, picked it up -- and threw it into the stands as everyone advanced 2 bases.

Derek Bell stepped in and lofted a game-ending fly ball to sure-handed Lance Johnson -- who lost it in the lights or something, as it dropped for a double!  Tie game.

Three hits & 2 wild pitches on behalf of the visitors in the 11th made the final 5-3.  Ward, the luckiest choking chump in the league, got his FIFTH win by actually pitching well for once, and Tom Henke tossed an inning to earn the save.  Henke's ERA in now 0.79; if that were his batting average, he'd still be ahead of much of the TOA lineup (see also Stottlemyre, Todd).

================================================

Game 3: Bobby Witt returned to Texas to face his old mates, and was pitching adequately -- but not nearly well enough -- until HAL surgically dismembered him for 3 runs after there were 2 outs & nobody on in the TEA 8th; three valuable insurance runs that Ranger starter Jose Guzman had no use for whatsoever.

Guzman tossed a 4-hitter, walking nobody and fanning 12 of the most hapless losers in the major leagues.  Final score: 5-1.  Witt had done well just to keep the score close (9 LOB) despite typical wildness and uncharacteristic hittability even before the fatal surgery.

================================================

Game 4: While Duane the Vulture racks up wins galore, Todd Stottlemyre entered this game with a 1.21 ERA in 3 starts -- and NO wins.  No losses either because he gets run support -- after he leaves.  Stottlemyre has in fact pitched almost as well as his ERA suggests and today he tossed 4.1 scoreless innings to reduce his ERA to 1.01 and was one batter away from getting down to just decimal places.  Of course the next batter homered to deprive the luckless righthander of even that momentary glory.

Toronto still had a 2-1 lead, so with 2 outs and a man on first in the TEA 8th, a critical wild pitch moved the runner to second.  Critical?  Of course the next batter came up with a '$' single to tie the game.

Underused and massively underachieving starter Juan Guzman came on instead of the highly-overused bullpen and retired all 4 batters he faced and notched his second win.  Because in the TOA 9th, Rene Gonzales's error plated Devon White and the Jays had yet another unlikely 1-run win.

Further documenting the utter futility of the puny Toronto offense, TEA pitchers in games 2-4 combined to walk just 4 batters and strike out **32** Blue Jays.

Alan
