Subject: Chicago @ St.Louis

The Cubs and Cards series mirrored the start of this season's NL East race.  A lot interesting occurrences, but no real separation.

G1 Both teams scratched for 1 run in the first innings, but it was the home team that put together the first (and only) multi-run inning of the opener.  Todd Zeile singled with one out and light-hitting Bernard Gilkey (hitting .171 at the time) launched a 2-run blast to put St.Louis up, 3-1.  Gilkey almost single-handedly added an insurance run in the 7th when he singled, stole 2nd, raced to 3B on Wilkins' throwing error and then scored on Ozzie Smith's RBI (sacrifice) squeeze bunt.   Four runs were all that Mark Clark (6 1/3 6 1 1 3 1) would require as he consistently escaped trouble to move to 4-1 on the season.  While Gilkey led the Cardinals with his 2-for-3 game, Mark Grace's 2-for-4 performance provided Chicago with the only RBI in the opening game.

Final Score: St.Louis 4, Chicago 1
WP- M.Clark 4-1, LP- Morgan 4-3, SV- Smith (5)
HR- Gilkey (2)

G2 The Cubs tried a novel idea of putting MVP candidate Ryne Sandberg in the leadoff spot and it worked like a charm.  The 2B not only led off the game with a homer, but he also went 4-for-5 with a double as he led a 12-hit, 6-walk attack.  If the Cubs hadn't stranded 10 runners, Chicago would have scored far more than the 7 runs they finished the game with.    Cubs' starter Pete Harnisch (5 6 3 3 0 3) left at just the right time (up 4-3 after 5 innings) and for once, Chicago's bullpen was fairly flawless- keeping St.Louis scoreless the rest of the way.  The Cards' Tom Pagnozzi led his team with a 2-for-3 game which included his 1st HR of the season.  It also helped him pull his average above the Mendoza line to .215.  Also after suffering a homerless April, Sammy Sosa started May off with his first longball.

Final Score: Chicago 7, St. Louis 3
WP- Harnisch 3-1, LP- Tewksbury 2-2, SV- Scanlan (6)
HR- Sandberg (9), Pagnozzi (1), Sosa (1)

G3 With a second chance to reach .500, Chicago...  fell short again.  This time the game featured a pitcher's duel between Darryl Kile (6 4 1 1 2 4) and Omar Olivares (7 5 0 0 3 7).   St.Louis was attempting to make a 2nd inning sac fly from Pete O'Brien stand up.  It appeared it would not be enough when the Cubs batted in the 8th off closer Lee Smith.  Bip Roberts singled and Bobby Hill walked in front of a solidly-stroked single to RF by Mark Grace.  Felix Jose's (-3) arm came into play as Roberts was 1-17 to score and I pulled the 18 split.  There remained a 1-2 chance against Tom Pagnozzi, but he easily slapped the tag on the Bipster.   With one out now, Sandberg popped out with runners in scoring position before Smith walked Dwight Smith intentionally.  Smith then struck out Rick Wilkins to end the threat and leave the bases full.  Tateriffic reliever Jeff Robinson aided the Cardinals in tacking on 2 insurance runs in the 8th (when Jose hit a long bomb) although it no longer mattered in this one.

Final Score: St.Louis 3, Chicago 0
WP- Olivares 2-3, LP- Kile 0-4, SV- Smith (6)
HR- Jose (4)

G4 was another hard fought contest between these rivals.  The Cubs got single runs in the 2nd and 3rd to build a 2-0 early lead for Frank Castillo (6 5 2 2 3 3).  However, after Gregg Jefferies doubled to open the 6th, Jose again came through with an RBI single, a stolen base, wild pitch, and sac fly by Todd Zeile, and the game was suddenly tied, 2-2.  Both teams bullpens held until the 9th when Cris Carpenter let one get away for a crucial HBP of SS Alex Arias.  With 2 outs, Rick Wilkins singled hime to 3rd and Donnie Hill doubled him home prior to Wilkins being thrown out at the plate to end the Cubs' threat.  Bob Scanlan pitched a 1-2-3 9th to end the series.

Final Score: Chicago 3, St.Louis 2
WP- C.Jones 1-0, LP- Carpenter 1-2, SV- Scanlan (7)
HR- none
