Sox come so close to a sweep in the Motor City
Game 1: Ben Rivera went to the mound for Detroit and the The Wild Thing (oops Roger Clemens) took the mound for Boston. Clemens would walk 4 (including 3 in the first 2 innings) to bring his season total to 21 or roughly 1/3 of the 65 he should issue for the entire season. Throw in 5 splits of 1 for Detroit and you would think it was a route. It was a 9-4 final score, but in Boston's favor. In his first game for Boston, Von Hayes may have set a team record by stealing 2 bases in a game.....even though he was 0-3 on his 67% jump. He had an rbi single in the 4th and also scored to give Boston a 2-0 lead. Plantier hit a bp homer in the 6th to stretch the lead to 3. Fielder doubled and scored in the 7th to get Detroit on the board. In the 8th, Boston had a run in and men on 2nd and 3rd and Tim Naehring was due to bat. After long consideration about pinch hitting for him, he was left in to bat and hit a 3 run homer. 2 batters later, Brunansky added a 2 run bp homer and the lead was 9-1. WIth 2 outs in the bottom of the inning, Detroit got back to back bp splits of 1. The first a single (1-3 chance), the 2nd a homer. They added one more run in the 9th thanks to Clemens getting that 5-11 walk roll.
game 2: Bob Ojeda looked to keep his perfect season going and he did. He tossed 7 shutout innings, allowing just 3 hits and 1 walk and raised his record to 5-0 while dropping his era to 2.08. Edens and Lilliquist each tossed a scoreless inning to complete the shutout. Deer had 2 of the 3 rbi's as Boston scored in 3 different innings to win 3-0.
game 3: The Boston bullpen came into this game having allowed just 1 inherited runner to score and just 3 homers in 60 innings of work. Joe Hesketh and John Doherty locked up in an unexpected pitchers duel. Naehring's rbi single in the 2nd was the only run of the game through 5 innings. Hesketh was near perfect through 5, allowing just 2 base runners, both on errors. However with 1 out in the 6th, Phillips and Trammell hit back to back doubles off his 6 column to tie the game. Hayes had a 2 run single in the 8th (on an x play hit to Felix) to put Boston up 3-1. Eichorn got the first 2 outs in the bottom of the inning before 2 singles brought in closer Lilliquest. Whitaker doubled them in to tie the game. Lilliquist and Willis locked it down from there as there was just 1 base runner in the next 2 1/2 innings and he was erased on a dp. In the bottom of the 11th, Trammell led off with a walk and was bunted to second. After a flyout moved him to third, Mitch Webster stepped in an rolled a 3-2. Even with it being just a 1-10 chance because of the bad weather, there was really no doubt what the result would be.. Split of 2 and Dennis Powell's first Boston appearance ended ugly.
